Do you ever walk through Hurley Park and wonder what all of the trees and plants are, why gardens were planted in such a way, or even how they were selected?

If so, then I have the perfect expedition for you. This year, Hurley Park staff is partnering with the N.C. Cooperative Extension Master Gardener Volunteers of Rowan County for a walking tree and plant tour of Hurley Park.

Saturday’s tour is part of the Extension Master Gardeners’ “Do-It-Yourself” series. During this free tour, participants will learn the ins and outs of the entire park — how things came to be, why trees are planted where, how the park is run, and interesting specimens that the park boasts.

The event will run from 8:30-10:30 a.m. Saturday, so that, hopefully, the walk will be during the coolest part of the day. Bring comfy shoes and clothing, sunglasses, sunhats, sunscreen and insect repellent. The Extension Master Gardeners will bring water but if you prefer your own, you can bring that, too.

Trees are the main focus of this event, but we will also mention some of the plant specimens. Trees are also the focus for this year’s Do-It-Yourself series with the Extension Master Gardeners, and we are thrilled they want Hurley Park to be part of this year’s courses.
