Catawba’s baseball team split a doubleheader with Wingate, losing 11-3 and winning 17-3
In the opener, the Bulldogs handed Blake Ketner (5-1) his first loss. Ryan Query homered for the Indians.
In the nightcap, Catawba belted five homers. Chris Ahearn, Josh Hohn, Craige Lyerly, Brett Hatley and Jake Faggart connected. Hatley’s homer was a grand slam. Hohn and Faggart also knocked in four runs to back solid pitching by Tim Holmes. Zeb Link had three hits.
Catawba won the SAC series 2-1.
n Prep baseball
Davie battered Waccamaw Academy 12-2 in six innings in the Myrtle Beach Showcase on Saturday.
Josh Berryhill was strong on the mound for the War Eagles (5-1) after allowing two runs in the first inning.
Jess Cartner went 3-for-3 and accounted for three of Davie’s eight steals. Evan Crisco and Jacob Vernon had key extra-base hits as the War Eagles roughed up Kyle Hufham, a junior pitcher who throws in the low 90s and is committed to UNC.
n Jayvee baseball
West Rowan beat Northwest Cabarrus 4-1. Ethan Marsh was the winning pitcher for the Falcons (1-3). Patrick Hampton and Steven Wetmore had two hits each, including home runs.
n Prep softball
East Rowan’s Chelsea White struck out 14 and pitched a no-hitter in Friday’s 4-2 victory against Carson. Ericka Nesbitt had three hits for the Mustangs. Carson pitcher Megan Meismer struck out six.
n Northwest Cabarrus’ Alex Yohe pitched a no-hitter, and Rebecca Faust went 3-for-3 in a 4-0 victory against West Rowan.
– North Rowan lost to West Davidson 1-0. Kristin Holshouser struck out eight for the Cavs. Marquita Thomas and Samantha Jacobs had North’s hits.
n 7th-grade hoops
No. 5 China Grove’s boys edged No. 4 Knox 41-40 as the Rowan County Middle School Conference tournament opened at Corriher-Lipe on Saturday. China Grove (4-10) was led by Shawn Spry with 33 points, including 14 in the fourth quarter.
John Canipe scored 15 points for Knox (6-7). Jaquez Finger scored nine, Nick Brown seven and Albert Brittford five.
n No. 2 West Rowan beat No. 7 Corriher-Lipe 57-28. Droderick Avery and Justin Kimber paced West with 12 points apiece. Derrick Fortson, Nick Collins and Michael Ball added eight each. Tyler Kennedy scored seven for the Bulldogs (11-2).
Corriher-Lipe (0-13) was led by Dalton Carter with 14 points. Mitchell Gray had six.
n No. 3 Southeast defeated No. 6 Erwin 64-33. Tre Williams scored 24 points for the Patriots (10-3). Myquon Stout had seven points and 12 rebounds. Cody Dale (seven), Darius Gabriel (six), Colton Laws (five) and Seth Martin (five) helped out in the scoring column, and Dashaun Mason had 11 rebounds.
Erwin (3-11) was led by Calvin Edwards and Thomas Phillips with six points each. Donte Means added five. Dock Corpening had nine rebounds and four blocks. Chase Brown had seven boards.
Girls
No. 2 Knox rolled to a 55-18 victory over No. 7 Corriher-Lipe behind Brielle Blaire’s 20 points, 15 rebounds, four assists, three blocked shots and three steals. Nyasia Harris had 10 points, 11 boards and four blocks. Monifa Angle had 10 points and four steals for the Trojans (11-2). Cheyenne Gloster scored eight, and Alexi McCollough scored five.
Corriher-Lipe (1-12) was led by Rachel Honeycutt and Haley Shore with eight points each.
n No. 3 China Grove beat No. 6 North Rowan 53-13. Madison Weast paced the Red Devils (9-6) with 18 points. Katie Barringer scored 15.
North Rowan (2-11) was led by Simone Blackwell with five points.
n No. 4 Southeast topped No. 5 West Rowan 36-33. The Patriots (8-5) were led by Megan Gray’s 11 points and Laura Vaughn’s 10. Quanice Miller added eight points.
West Rowan (3-10) got 11 points, including a last-second 3 from Michaela White. LaShunda Johnson had nine points and Mary Noble six.

n Catawba softball
Catawba opened SAC play Saturday with a 6-4, 4-2 sweep of Carson-Newman. In the opener, Chelsea Wallace pitched a complete game. Brittany Thornburg went 3-for-3, and Cassie Markham knocked in two runs.
Meghan Cobb was the winning pitcher in the nightcap. Ryann Baker homered. Thornburg and Allie Marshall had two hits each.
