Martin Fleischaker will be the featured author at the Literary Bookpost Saturday Salon on April 4 from 1:30-3:30 p.m.
Fleischaker will present an intimate, front-of-store poetry reading along with a book signing of his recent book of poetry, “The Calling Bird.”
Fleischaker has been an educator, psychologist, professional counselor, artist, musician and poet for most of his life. He has been an advocate for children, particularly in education, in which he holds lifetime certifications in New Jersey, Missouri and California. He is licensed in North and South Carolina for counseling and school psychology.
He now lives in North Carolina and has a residence in the Philippines with his wife, Maria, and their children, Michael and Samantha.

Woodturners event at library
The Southern Piedmont Woodturners will demonstrate their art, share techniques and entertain questions with a special event, “Turnin’& Grinnin’ Demo Day,” on Saturday, April 25 from 9:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the South Rowan Regional Library in China Grove.
This special showing brings a wide range of professional turners to demonstrate this unique craft of creating beautiful and distinctive works of art from wood.
Several artists, including Barry Russell, Jerry Measimer, Jack Reyome, Steve Lund, Roland Hege and others will be turning a variety of projects throughout the day, and will share techniques and answer questions from participants as they work. Area turners are invited to receive help with any problem areas in their work. Work will also be on display during the demonstration day.
Work of this local guild was recently displayed at the South Rowan Library, and was one of the most talked about displays in recent history.
The Southern Piedmont Woodturners is a member chapter of the American Association of Woodturners, whose mission is to enhance the art of woodturning through education. There are 46 members from Rowan and surrounding counties, whose skill levels range from novice to professional and come from all walks of life.
Writing contest
The Davidson County Writers’ Guild 2009 Adult Writing Contest runs April 1-June 30.
Any North Carolina writer 18 years and older who has not won first or second place in the contest may enter. Past winners may enter a different category.
The author’s name should not appear on the manuscript. Send a cover sheet with title, name, address and phone number. Type the story on regular paper, double-spaced, and submit three copies. For return of entries, send a self-addressed, stamped envelope.
You may enter fiction or non-fiction, not previously published, maximum 1,500 words. Please specify fiction or non-fiction on cover sheet.
For poetry, one previously unpublished poem, maximum 32 lines.
Prizes are first, $50; second, $25; and third, $10. Winners will be recognized at the October meeting of the guild and will read their entry.
