Area briefs: Sturgis Athlete of the Week

Appalachian State’s Mark Sturgis (North Rowan) was named Southern Conference Field Athlete of the Week for the first meet of the outdoor track season.
Sturgis won the triple jump at the Wake Forest Invitational.
n SAC Hall of Fame
Former league commissioner Doug Echols, Lenoir-Rhyne volleyball’s Michelle Baity, Tusculum tennis player Lesley Murray, Carson-Newman basketball’s Leah Jackson Smith and Mars Hill soccer’s Andy Thompson will be inducted into the SAC Hall of Fame in Asheville June 4.
n Hole-in-one
Brandon Medlin recorded a hole-in-one at Corbin Hills.
He aced the 190-yard No. 5 hole with a 4-iron. Donald Terzi witnessed the feat.
n Volleyball
Salisbury Academy’s volleyball team lost to Sacred Heart 3-2. Lindsay Bearss and Anna Flynn led the Jaguars.
n Rainouts
Games were wiped out by Friday’s rain.
Catawba now plans to play baseball at Newberry Saturday night at 7 p.m. and hopes to play a doubleheader starting Sunday at 1 p.m.
n South Rowan-West Iredell baseball will be played Monday.
n Today’s South-Carson baseball clinic is cancelled.
n East Rowan-Mooresville baseball was rescheduled for April 22.
n College baseball
Trey Holmes (East Rowan) had a run-scoring double at Pitt Community College beat Lenoir CC 3-2. Holmes is batting .452 in 17 games with three homers, five doubles and 28 RBIs.
n Tennis clinics
Catawba has set dates for summer tennis camps.
