Area Sports Briefs: Kannapolis stays tied for first on Tuttle’s homer

Kannapolis Post 115 hit three homers,  won in dramatic fashion on Saturday at home and stayed tied for first place with Rowan County  American Legion in the Southern Division of Area III race.

Kannapolis prevailed, 6-5, against Stanly County to improve to 7-2 in the division.

A.L. Brown’s Cord Butler hit a three-run homer to give Kannapolis the early lead.

Home schooler Michael Harrell socked a two-run blast to snap a 3-all tie, but Stanly came back once again.

It was 5-all in the bottom of the seventh when former A.L. Brown star Jacob Tuttle hit a walk-off homer for Kannapolis.

Colton Austin drove in two runs for Stanly Post 76.

Kannapolis goes to Mocksville tonight for a 7 p.m. contest at Rich Park, while Stanly plays at Concord.

Kannapolis and Rowan had planned to play on Monday in a non-division game, but that game has been canceled.

Concord survived Eastern Randolph’s five-run fourth inning and beat Post 81, 9-8, on Saturday.

Jeremiah Boyd and Ick Cirino knocked in two runs each for Concord Post 51.

Hunter Little homered for Eastern Randolph, Connor Patterson and Connor Shipley drove in two apiece.

Winston-Salem Post 55 scored three runs in the first and kept the momentum in a 10-3 win against High Point Post 97 on Saurday at Mount Tabor High.

The playoffs start on July 3. The first-place Southern team and the top two Northern teams will  have first-round byes.

Minor leagues

ROME, Ga. — Drew Harrington pitched five scoreless innings, leading the Kannapolis Intimidators over the Rome Braves in a 6-4 win on Saturday.

Aron McRee struck William Contreras out with a runner on first to end the game for his third save of the season.

Harrington (4-3) allowed two hits while striking out three and walking two to get the win.

Kannapolis batted around in the fifth inning, sending 11 batters to the plate and scoring six runs, including a two-run double by Tyler Frost.

Jerry  Sands (Catawba) smacked his 19th double for Richmond on Saturday.

Former Catawba catcher Zac Almond hit the first homer of his pro career on Saturday for Missoula.

Junior Legion

West Rowan won against Concord, 8-6, on Saturday in Mount Ulla. Zeb Burns and Lane Adkins did the pitching. Cullen Davis had two doubles and two RBIs. Andrew Kennerly had two RBIs. JT Fecteau had two hits.

Hurley YMCA

The J.F. Hurley YMCA is registering players for camps. Basketball camp is July 9-13 from 9-11:30 a.m. Camp is for grades 2-8.

Registration ends July 4.

Cost is $60 for members and $80 for non-members.

Volleyball camp is July 16-20 from 9-11:30 a.m. and is for girls in grades 4-8.
