Kannapolis smashed Kernersville, 10-1, in the first game of a best-of-three, first-round American Legion baseball playoff series on Tuesday.

Kannapolis broke the Area III game open with a five-run third inning. Cord Butler had a two-run triple and Rohan Handa and winning pitcher Jason White drove in runs.

Kannapolis scored three runs in the sixth to make it 10-1, with Jacob Tuttle, Butler and Austin Dayvault knocking in runs.

Kernersville’s only run  against White was unearned and came in the first inning. Kannapolis out-hit Kernersville, 11-6.

Kannapolis ended the game on a double play when Butler made a catch in right field and doubled a runner off first base. Game 2 is tonight in Kernersville.

Jeremiah Boyd slugged a walk-off homer to lift Concord to a 5-4 win against Davidson County in the opening game of their best-of-three playoff series.

Game 2 is tonight at Holt-Moffitt Field.

Will Dagenhart and Lukas Scott had two hits each for Stanly County in a 4-3 win against Eastern Randolph in Game 1 of their best-of-three series.

Clay Pinion scored on a wild pitch in the fifth inning to break a -all tie.

Tyler Captain pitched six innings for the win, with Ryan Baucom earning a save. Baucom got the final out of the game on a popup  with the bases loaded.

Hunter Little had two hits and two RBIs for Post 81. Connor Shipley and Jordan Cassell also had two hits.

South Rowan won against Carson, 7-5, on Tuesday.

Local golf

Fifty-nine GARS members played in the The Best of Nines, The Worst of Nines Tournament at Corbin Hills.

The first place team with a minus-16 was Bill Saunders, Gary Schenk, Ben Moore and Bill Reid.

Second place went to the team of Buddy Barger, Mike Sides, Edgar Osborne and Johnny Graham with a minus-13.

The third-place team with a minus-12 was Larry Petrea, Larry Luther, Mike Williams and Steve Kale.

Low gross was Larry Petrea with a 70. Low net was won by Saunders.

Winsten Mahaffey, 81, shot a 75. Moore, 81, shot an 81. Clive Mahaffey, 83, shot a 79. Saunders, 84, shot an 82. Buddy Barger, 84, shot a 78. Dick Hatoway, 85, shot an 81.

Ray Pope won closest to the pin on No. 2, and Lou Manning had longest putt on No. 9.

Clive Mahaffey eagled the par-4 17th, and Reid Bradshaw eagled the par-5 18th hole.

ROME, Ga. — Greyson Jenista had two hits and scored three runs, and Huascar Ynoa allowed just four hits over six innings as the Rome Braves beat  Kannapolis 7-5 on Tuesday.
