American Legion baseball isn’t far off, as Legion play will start earlier than usual this season. South Rowan and Kannapolis submitted schedules to the Post Sunday.
Kannapolis opens with an Area III Southern Division game at Statesville on May 20. The first game at Veterans Field is a tussle against South that won’t count in the league standings. That one is set for May 21.
South has scheduled four games against league opponents that won’t count in the league standings to open its season. South will play Kannapolis twice and Mooresville twice in those contests.
South’s league opener is May 26 at Lexington’s Holt-Moffitt Field.
Kannapolis is home against Rowan May 30 and travels to Newman Park June 22.
South is home against Rowan June 2 and plays at Newman Park June 23.

West Iredell is at South Rowan for a makeup game this afternoon. Other county teams get back into action Tuesday, along with A.L. Brown and Davie, although rain is in the forecast once again as the week moves along.

Beginning with tonight’s game with Ledford, all Salisbury soccer home games the rest of the season will be “Stand Up to Cancer” nights to honor the late Kay Yow and others who have battled cancer. N.C. State basketball standout Shayla Fields, who was close to Yow, was once a Hornet goalkeeper.
Salisbury’s boys program lost a great soccer player and personó Jack Campbell ó to the disease several years ago.
Donations will be accepted at the front gate. Proceeds go to the American Cancer Society.
– Pro golf
Local product Tripp Isenhour shot 69-71-75-76 ó 291 and finished 17 shots off the pace in the Nationwide Tour’s Louisiana Open over the weekend.
Isenhour won $1,293. He’s earned $5,276 in five events this season.
– College golf
Virginia’s Will Collins (Salisbury) shot 69 and tied for third in the first round of Sunday’s tournament at Bulls Bay Golf Club in Awendaw, S.C.
– College baseball
Lenoir-Rhyne’s Zach Glass (Salisbury) hit a three-run homer Sunday in a 10-4 victory against Carson-Newman. Carson-Newman came back to win the second game 8-5 despite three hits by Glass.
* UNC’s Kyle Seager (NW Cabarrus) hit a two-run homer in Sunday’s 6-5 win against Virginia. UNC freshman second baseman Levi Michael, an 18-year-old who graduated in December from North Davidson so he could play for the Tar Heels right away, went 4-for-4.
* Montreat’s Ryan Bostian (South Rowan) had two hits in a 7-1 loss against Bluefield.
* Northwest Florida State’s Keegan Linza (North Rowan) pitched six scoreless innings in an 8-0 victory against Gulf Coast. Linza is 3-1 with a 2.89 ERA. He’s fanned 51 batters in 462/3 innings.
* Lander’s Billy Veal (North) allowed three runs in 21/3 innings in a 13-5 loss against Georgia College & State Sunday. Veal struck out three.
* Jerod Faggart (NW Cabarrus) homered as Appalachian State split a doubleheader with Davidson. Nick Daniels (NW Cabarrus) pitched two scoreless innings for the Mountaineers with two strikeouts in a 15-5 victory.
* Appalachian State’s sophomore second baseman Wes Hobson had a huge day. He was 5-for-11 with a homer and five RBIs. Hobson’s father, Gil, was a standout athlete at North Rowan in the late 1970s.
* Wilkes Community College is 19-4. Jacob Dobbins (North) is batting .400, while Jason Brown (A.L. Brown) is hitting .375.
Cy Young (East Rowan) is 6-0 on the mound, while Jason Ridenhour (North) is 3-2. Justin Kidd (West Rowan) has two saves.
* Catawba’s Craige Lyerly (East) is batting .420, sixth in the SAC.
* Alex Britt (Salisbury) pitched well Sunday as Mars Hill beat Lincoln Memorial 4-3 to salvage a split of a doubleheader. Britt allowed three runs in 62/3 innings. He struck out four.
* Sean Cotton (Lake Norman) had a destructive weekend series as Tusculum crushed St. Andrews three times. Cotton was 5-for-7 with eight RBIs.
– College softball
Erin Foster (West Rowan) had three hits and two RBIs, but Walters State recently dropped two games to Chattanooga State.
– College tennis
Tusculum beat Catawba 8-1 in SAC women’s tennis Sunday at Johnson Tennis Center. The Pioneers swept the doubles to take an early lead then won five singles matches. Tusculum, ranked 27th in D-II, improves to 10-3 overall and 3-0 in the SAC. Steffi Cook earned the lone point for the Indians (6-7, 0-3).
– Tusculum’s men topped Catawba 6-3. The Pioneers improve to 8-5 overall and 2-1.
Catawba got singles wins at the top from Sean Soltan and Matt King. King teamed with Tom McCormack as the Indians (9-6, 0-3) won at No. 2 doubles.
