Area Sports Briefs: Morris scores CFL TD

Romar Morris (Salisbury, UNC) got his first chance in a regular season game and scored a touchdown for the Calgary Stampeders in a 27-3 romp against Ottawa on Thursday.
Morris rushed nine times for 17 yards but did most of his damage in the return game. He had nine punt returns for 104 yards and two kickoff returns for 34 yards.
Legion baseball
Shelby won, 5-3, against the Gaston Braves on Thursday at Keeter Stadium in the opening game of a second-round series in the Area IV playoffs.
Shelby is 22-2. Gaston is 12-11.
Local golf
It’s never too late for that first hole-in-one.
Fred Wilson made his first one on Thursday at McCanless. Wilson, 82, has been playing for 40 years.
Wilson aced the 115-yard No. 6 hole and used a 9-iron to accomplish the feat.

Rowan Little League
Rowan Little League’s 9-10 softball state champs will head to the regional in Clarksville, Tenn., July 20-26.

Intimidators
GREENSBORO — Drew Harrington threw seven scoreless innings, leading the Kannapolis Intimidators over the Greensboro Grasshoppers in a 2-1 win on Thursday.
Jose Nin got Michael Hernandez to ground out with runners on first and third to end the game for his fourth save of the season.
Harrington (5-4) allowed four hits while striking out seven and walking two to pick up the win.
Greensboro is 8-4 against Kannapolis this season.
Junior Legion
Mocksville starts the Area IIII championship series tonight at Randolph County Red.
Both teams have qualified for the state tournament in Manteo
Legion softball
Rowan County has won big in three non-division games this week, clobbering Stanly County 12-2 and 16-0 on Tuesday and 16-2 on Thursday.
Rowan is 6-9, while Stanly is 0-12.
