From staff reports Carlos Bautista went 3-for-3 to lead West Rowan to an 11-9 victory over Wilmington New Hanover Monday in the first round of an Easter tournament being played at Wilmington’s Ashley High.
Brantley Horton homered for the Falcons (3-6), who won their third straight. Horton and Randy Shepherd had two hits each.
Zack Simpson was the winning pitcher. He had an 11-2 lead before New Hanover erupted for seven runs in the fifth. D.J. Webb finished up on the mound.
West plays unbeaten Wilmington Laney today in a 4:30 p.m. semifinal. Laney is 12-0.
n Mooresville defeated Pickering, one of Ohio’s top teams, 10-7 Monday in an Easter tournament at Myrtle Beach.
Wes Dumford was the winning pitcher. Dylan West and Aaron Meadows had three hits each. Nathan Abraham had two hits. Ian Walters hit a two-run homer.
Mooresville plays another Ohio team tonight at 7 p.m.
n Cody Beck (4-0) pitched Central Davidson to a 7-2 CCC victory against East Davidson.
Brett Woodard’s two-out, two-run single in the seventh snapped a 2-2 tie. Justin Law had two hits for the Spartans, while Trevor Leonard knocked in two runs.
Central Davidson (9-1, 5-1) plays West Davidson today.
n College baseball
Catawba was stunned 2-0 at Anderson Sunday.
Bryson Graydon shut down Catawba and helped his team snap an 18-game losing skid.
Blake Ketner (NW Cabarrus) pitched seven innings for Catawba (19-12), striking out four and scattering 10 hits.
B.J. Smith picked up three hits for Anderson (17-27).
Catawba stranded six , hit into a pair of double plays and had a runner picked off.
The Tribe loaded the bases with two out in the seventh, but Graydon got an infield popup to end the threat.
Kevin McMillan (North Rowan) and Zeb Link (West Rowan) had two hits each for the Indians.
n Pitt Community College’s Trey Holmes (East Rowan) was 6-for-12 at Pitt took four games from USC Lancaster.
Holmes hit a two-run homer and picked up eight RBIs.
n UNC Pembroke’s Rudy Brown (South Rowan) nailed down the last two outs in a 6-1 victory against Georgia Southwestern Monday.
n Wilkes Community College split with Catawba’s developmental team Monday. Wilkes won two of three from Southeastern CC over the weekend.
n Prep softball
Carson made five errors, three in the seventh inning and let a lead slip away Monday at Lake Norman.
The Cougars lost 7-6.
Heather Yount and Chloe Monroe had two hits each for Carson (5-4, 3-4). Kourtney McGrady and Marissa Sellers had triples.
Carson is home against West Iredell today.
n Prep soccer
West Rowan (6-4) earned its fifth shutout of the season with a 2-0 win against NPC foe North Iredell Monday.
Brittany Gibbons scored on an assist from Allison Baucom, and Baucom scored on an assist by Gibbons.
“We were very fortunate to come out of this game with a victory,” West coach Nick Brown said.
“We only brought 15 people and that includes the bus driver, coach and an injured player. Everyone played hard tonight.”
For the season, Gibbons has 10 goals and 12 assists.
n In a big NPC matchup, Lake Norman outscored Statesville 5-3 Monday night.
n Catawba golf
Catawba finished eighth out of 15 teams at the Carolina Sands Intercollegiate men’s golf tournament which concluded Sunday.
Coker claimed the team title, edging out Barton on a scorecard playoff after both teams finished with a 567 total. Catawba shot an even 600.
Eric Schmehl was the top finisher for Catawba. His score of 146 placed 18th. Evan Kilchenstein was 25th with a total of 148.
n North Hills tennis
North Hills won a hard-fought match Friday at Statesville Montessori.
Top seed Logan Miller, Jay Wood and Michael Jones all won their matches for the Eagles.
Jay Wood and Logan Miller won in doubles.
Abby Robinette and Ashley Wood won a doubles match by default.
n Overseas basketballTerris Sifford (West Rowan) scored 30 points for his team in Italy Saturday night.
n Catawba tennisCatawba’s women beat Lenoir-Rhyne 6-3 on Monday afternoon at the Johnson Tennis Center.
Catawba (9-8, 1-4 SAC) took a 2-1 lead in doubles. Steffi Cook, Jennifer Dameron and Kim Renspie won in singles and doubles for Catawba.
Kate Meiners picked up two points for the Bears (0-15, 0-7 SAC).
n Catawba’s men pulled out a 5-4 decision against L-R’s Bears.
Uri Yarkoni rallied from a set down to earn the deciding point at No. singles for the Indians (10-8, 1-4 SAC). Matt King and Tom McCormick won for Catawba in singles and doubles.
The Bears (6-14 and 0-7) led 2-1 after doubles.
