City Council to consider Downtown Revitalization Incentive Grant

SALISBURY — The Salisbury City Council will consider a request for a Downtown Revitalization Incentives Grant for a mixed-use construction project at 201 E. Innes St. when it meets at 5 p.m. today.
The request is for as much as $142,204 for a project to build eight apartments on two levels.
The apartments will be two-bedroom, two-bathroom units ranging from 940 to 1,440 square feet.
The grant would be used to install water and sewer services for the new residences, as well as to install a fire sprinkler system.
A third level of the mixed-use office and residential building will house the offices of Healthcare Management Consultants and its 20-plus employees.
Healthcare Management Consultants currently has an office on Statesville Boulevard.
The Downtown Revitalization Incentives program is a package of four grants.
The request, made by Downtown Properties LLC, will fall under the residential construction, utilities and fire system category.
Downtown Properties also intends to redevelop an adjacent historic warehouse and construct a new building in the parking lot of 219 E. Innes St.
The new building will include reuse of the granite facade of the historic gas station that was removed from the 201 E. Innes St. site.
The developer is requesting money only for the mixed-use project, which has a total cost of $2.9 million.
In other business on today’s agenda:
• The council will hear a report from Police Chief Jerry Stokes about crime in the city and Police Department staffing.
• The council will hear a presentation on classes available in the city and at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College in the areas of light construction, medical coding and forklift operation.
The classes will be offered at Hall Gym and Miller Recreation Teen Center to students 18 years and older. They will be free for city residents.
• The council could vote to restrict commercial trucks on Newsome Road from East Innes Street to Stokes Ferry Road.
