Nick Lyerly is the qualifying medalist for the Horace Billings Rowan Amateur golf tournament at Corbin Hills.

Lyerly shot 66.

Qualifying was completed despite a lot of rain and a wet course.

The defending champ is Keith Dorsett, who won in 2016 as well as last year.

Lyerly won the tournament in 2015.

Match play starts on Friday and concludes on Sunday.

In the 69th Carolinas Junior Boys Championship being held in Elgin, S.C., Salisbury’s Charlie Barr shot 76 on Tuesday.

The Cannon School golfer was having a great round Wednesday, 4-under after playing the back nine, but play was suspended by   storms.

Fifty-four GARS members played the first round of their Annual ABCD Tournament at Corbin Hills.

‘A’ Flight winner was Red McClain with a net of 60.25. ‘A’ Flight low gross winner was Bernard Caldwell with a 69.

‘B’ Flight winner was Ernest Wagner with a net of 64.37.  ‘B’ Flight low gross winner was Franklin Ford with a 78.

‘C’ Flight winner was Ron Ervin with a net of 64.80. ‘C’ Flight low gross winner was Tommy Ellis with an 85.

‘D’ Flight winner was Bert Bollinger with a net of 66.30. ‘D’ Flight low gross winner was Ralph Luther with an 89.

Steve Kale eagled the par-5 No. 6 hole

  Caldwell, 70, shot a 69. Ben Moore, 81, shot an 80.

Youth baseball

The East Rowan 8U all-stars won the rainy Southeast Regional in Ocala, Fla.

Rowan  won pool games against Oakleaf, Fla. (7-1), Martin, Tenn. (11-3) and Carrigan, Fla. (9-6).

Rowan advanced to the single-elimination bracket and won twice on the same day against Winterville, N.C. (6-4) and Oakleaf (7-1).

Rowan won the championship, 4-3, against Phipps Park, Fla., coming back to tie in the fifth and winning in the seventh.

The team was welcomed home with a celebration at Rockwell Elementary School last night.

Junior Legion

Mocksville lost to Windsor, 10-0, on Wednesday in the state championship game played at McCrary Park.

Ethan Wilkins and John Davenport had the only hits for Mocksville.

Coach certified

In Indianapolis,  Don Hesprich graduated from the  USA Track and Field Association Coaching Education with a Level II certification, specializing in all the throws — shot put, discus, javelin, weight throw and hammer throw.

Hesprich is an assistant coach at Livingstone College under head coach Justin Davis and also coaches throws for the  Salisbury Speedsters youth track and field team.

Little League softball

The Rowan Little League majors team (ages 11-12) starts play today in the Southeast Regional in Warner Robins, Ga.

Rowan  (7-0) takes on Darlington Little League (S.C.) at 5 p.m.

Legion softball

Kannapolis beat Davidson County, 7-5, in a first-round playoff game that was played on Wednesday after a couple of rainouts.

Kannapolis advances to a matchup with defending state champ Concord.
