Several Pfeiffer University students took home awards during the 55th Annual State Leadership Conference of the North Carolina State Chapter of Phi Beta Lambda in Charlotte.
The national association of college and university students who are interested in careers in business had 336 members and advisers in attendance.
Students attended seminars, assemblies and participated in competitive events that included objective tests, presentations and interviews. Pfeiffer students were recognized during the formal banquet for placing in eight competitive events.
The students honored were:
– Chris Carey, of Hanover Township, Pa., first in Help Desk and third in Project Management;
– Matthew Smith, of Norwood, first in Macroeconomics;
– Kristen Welsh, of New London, first in Impromptu Speaking and third in Business Communication;
– Stephanie Marotto, of Asheboro, second in Sales Presentation;
– Sam Miller, of Albemarle, second in Future Business Executive, was awarded a $650 NCPBL Foundation Scholarship and represented Pfeiffer in the Parade of Chapter Presidents at the First General Session.
The five Pfeiffer students qualified to represent North Carolina in the national competition at the National Leadership Conference in Anaheim, Calif., June 21-24.
Tina Preslar, assistant professor of accounting at Pfeiffer, was recognized for seven years of service as a Phi Beta Lambda local chapter adviser.
Robin Listerman and Deborah Wood, administrative assistants at Pfeiffer, were both recognized for three years of service as Phi Beta Lambda local chapter advisers.
The Pfeiffer local chapter received the 2009 Terry Lowrance Leadership Award, was recognized for recruiting five new Professional Division members and placed second for Local Recruitment of Chapters for helping reactivate a chapter at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College.
Sam Miller earned the Executive and President level honor awards from the Career and Membership Achievement Program, which encompasses projects and initiatives with an emphasis on career development and preparation for the marketplace.
Miller received the Executive Award, which recognizes state and national involvement, public relations activities and leadership. He is one of two in North Carolina to receive the honor and among 23 nationwide.
He was eligible to earn the organization’s President Award, a national level honor that focuses on total association leadership, business skills and community involvement. Miller is one of two recipients of the President’s Award in North Carolina, and among six nationwide. He will be recognized with an award and pin during the organization’s national conference in June.
Judy’s Private Duty Care offers services
Judy Ritchie Futrell recently started Judy’s Private Duty Care LLC.
Patients will be evaluated on a private pay service only.
Her staff has training in assisting clients in their homes, nursing homes or hospital rooms. Assistance may range from four hours a day to full-time care. Local transportation can be scheduled for errands and doctor’s appointments.
Futrell has completed courses in business and nursing care at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College.
Richard D. Futrell is transportation director and oversees company operations. The Futrells are members of Salisbury Christian Fellowship.

Shell in investment consultant program
Jason M. Shell, a certified financial planner with Raymond James Financial Services, has become a member of the Institute of Investment Management Consulting at Raymond James.
He was selected by the group, which was developed to help financial advisors drive success in their consulting practices through educational programs, ongoing communications forums and networking with other financial advisers.
He attended a three-day certification program covering investment management consulting topics such as asset allocation, manager selection and portfolio construction.
An exam required advisers to apply concepts covered during the program to client situations, and he earned the designation of Investment Management Consultant.

Cabarrus arena earns honor for third time
CONCORD ó The Cabarrus Arena & Events Center has been recognized for venue excellence by winning the Prime Site Award for the third consecutive year.
Voted on by booking agents, promoters, talent buyers and special event planners, the annual Prime Site Awards presented by The Facilities Media Group acknowledge achievement in venue management. The announcement was made in the group’s publication, The Facilities SuperBook.
“We are very pleased to receive the Prime Site Award again this year,” said Frank Lapsley, general manager at the Cabarrus Arena. “We strive for excellence in everything we do so it’s a tremendous honor to have our high standards and creative energy recognized.”
During the past three years, the Cabarrus Arena & Events Center and its managing partner SMG have helped establish Cabarrus County as a favored destination. In 2008-2009, the Cabarrus Arena & Events center had notable increases in all of the event areas including concerts, family shows, banquets and sporting events. Two new leaders at Dale Earnhardt Inc.
MOORESVILLE ó Teresa Earnhardt, president and CEO of Dale Earnhardt Inc. has announced the appointments of two executive leaders.
Jeff Steiner was named executive vice president and general manager responsible for the oversight and management of Dale Earnhardt Inc., the Dale Earnhardt Foundation and special initiatives relating to Earnhardt properties. Steiner began this role on April 1.
Chad Warpula was appointed executive vice president and general counsel for Dale Earnhardt Inc. He will oversee the newly formed Earnhardt Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates joint venture and handle all legal matters.
Both executives will report to Teresa Earnhardt.
“Jeff and Chad are progressive leaders who will move our company into the future, as we adjust to the new global business climate, while continuing the legacy of Dale and the company he and I founded more than 25 years ago. We look forward to achieving great success together,” Teresa Earnhardt said in a statement.
Steiner, 44, comes to Dale Earnhardt, Inc. as a global operating and business executive with more than 23 years of experience, having served at Johnson Controls Automotive Systems Group as vice president and general manager, and at American Specialty Cars as executive vice president and chief marketing officer. He holds a bachelor’s degree in marketing and an MBA from Michigan State University. Steiner, his wife Chris, and their three children will live in Mooresville.
Warpula, 35, has worked with Dale Earnhardt Inc. since 1999, serving as the company’s legal advisor while employed as a partner at the law firm of Alston & Bird, LLP. Warpula joined Dale Earnhardt, Inc. as general counsel in 2006 and assumed the role of vice president in 2008. He earned his J.D., cum laude, from Wake Forest University School of Law, and holds a B.S., cum laude, in Public Administration and Psychology from Harding University. Warpula, his wife Kim, and their three children live in Charlotte.
Speedway, Stanly United Way team up
Lowe’s Motor Speedway has partnered with the United Way of Stanly County through its Fund-Racing program. The United Way of Stanly County is raising funds for its local efforts by selling tickets to some of the Speedway’s biggest events, including the Coca-Cola 600 on May 24.
The United Way of Stanly County will earn $4 to $14 per ticket sold to a variety of race events, including the North Carolina Education Lottery 200, NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race, Windstream Pole Night, CarQuest Auto Parts 300, Bojangles’ Pole Night, Dollar General 300, Bank of America 500 and the Summer Shootout Series.
“Instead of selling food or wrapping paper, groups can sell the chance for families, friends and co-workers to make unforgettable memories at a NASCAR race while still raising money for work in the community,” said Marcus Smith, president and general manager of Lowe’s Motor Speedway.
“To receive a 30-40 percent profit on every race ticket we sell is an incredible opportunity,” said Jennifer Gullette, United Way of Stanly County’s executive director.
Free copies of tax returns offered
From now through April 15, the Salisbury Staples will offer free black and white, double-sided copies ó up to 20 pages ó of 2008 tax returns.
Staples also offers 100 free scans to PDF documents until July 4 at all Copy & Print Center locations for customers who purchase a Staples Copy & Print Center USB flash drive.
Staples is at 355 Faith Road.
“We can all save a considerable amount of money, and have a positive impact on the environment, by taking a few minutes to think before hitting the print button on the copier or computer,” said John Burke, senior vice president of business services at Staples. “By offering free scans and copies during the tax season, we can help customers keep records of their tax returns both electronically and in hard-copy format while printing responsibly.”
In 2006, more than 99 million tons of paper, or 663 pounds per person, were consumed, according to the Secret Life of Paper. By printing double-sided documents, this number could be reduced 20 percent annually.
Staples Copy & Print Centers use 50 percent post consumer-waste recycled content paper certified by the Forest Stewardship Council as the standard offering for black and white high-speed copy and print jobs.
