Letter: Income inequality

Marjori Oxendine (in her Sunday letter, “Prices keep rising, but not incomes”) correctly spotlights that prices keep rising and wages have not kept up with costs of living.
She ends by saying that Gov. Roy Cooper should do something. However, it is the Republicans who have control of the N.C. General Assembly and of Washington. The governor, a Democrat, is powerless against the power-grabbing N.C. GOP leadership.
Looking at the big picture, there is a huge inequality in income in this country. Add to that, the wealthiest got huge tax breaks with the tax cuts and the rest of us did not get enough to pay for the cost of living.
The monstrous control by big money and its influence on politicians and laws that are enacted is more than mind-boggling.
The jobs picture does not look bad, but low-income families are having to work multiple low-paying jobs to try to keep their heads above water. And those low-paying jobs do not provide benefits, such as health care.
Yes, something must be done to address these inequalities, but do not blame those who do not have power to make the changes.
All of us must do more, and increasing the numbers of us who vote to vote out of office those who are to blame would be a beginning.
