Sacred Heart Catholic School

Sacred Heart Catholic School began classes for the new school year Wednesday.

For 136 years, Sacred Heart has educated students from Rowan, Davidson, Iredell and Cabarrus counties. This year, Principal Tyler Kulp begins his fourth year.

“We have spent all summer making our safe campus even more secure and also preparing for a fantastic year of learning,” Kulp said. “This year, we will introduce our new state-of-the-art maker space called the ‘Cranium Cove.’ Here, our students can be creative, gather together, invent and learn. This new classroom space has been generously funded and will include a 3D printer, Little Bits coding program, STEM building bricks, and hardware and tools for creating.

“Our commitment to integrated learning through STREAM is stronger than ever. We have always had a strong commitment to excellence, and, well, we are taking it up another notch again.”

Sacred Heart Catholic School is district-accredited by AdvancED of SACS and the Diocese of Charlotte. It is also state-Certified by the Department of Nonpublic Education. The school offers an advanced academic curriculum in language arts, math, science, social studies and computer technology, but it also believes that education in faith and community service is necessary for the development of a child.

Education of the spirit, mind and body is part of Sacred Heart’s mission.

Other subjects taught include: religion, Spanish, creative writing, handwriting, art, music appreciation and daily physical education. Additional offerings include Math Olympiad, Read Across America, Duke TIP, writing contests, a geography bee, an annual spelling bee, the N.C. State Science and Engineering Fair, 4-H Master Gardening, a spring musical performance and a chess club, to name a few.

Eighth-grade students are able to take English 1 and Math 1 for high school graduation credit. Sacred Heart also offers comprehensive tutoring in math, reading and Title I. An on-site after-school care program is available to all families from 3 to 6 p.m. daily.

Service and community support are important parts of student life, and Sacred Heart School has many traditions and activities that foster student growth. They include a morning assembly with prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance; weekly Mass; a Veterans Day program; Land Trust’s Leopold Society; an American Red Cross blood drive; parish food bank collections; the President’s Fitness Challenge; youth missions; Prayer Pals at Genesis Eldercare; ARC of Rowan’s Festival of Trees; Rowan Helping Ministries; and Pantene’s Beautiful Lengths.

In addition, Sacred Heart students host monthly drives to support local charities such as Food for Thought, Rowan Helping Ministries, Jump Rope for Heart, Meals on Wheels and Pregnancy Support Center.

Athletics are also an integral part of Sacred Heart and include junior varsity and varsity teams. The school offers 17 teams including soccer, basketball, volleyball, tennis, cheerleading, golf, softball, cross country, and track and field. Student athletes learn discipline, perseverance and strength through athletic programs.

Sacred Heart is open to all children in kindergarten through eighth grades and includes many nationalities and Christian affiliations. The campus is at 385 Lumen Christi Lane in Salisbury with new facilities on its 100-acre campus.

Sacred Heart offers personal school tours and prospective family conferences. Financial assistance is available to families who qualify. The school also participates in the N.C. Opportunity Scholarship Program.
