SALISBURY — The Salisbury Community Action Teams will sponsor a Community Resource Fair to tackle the city’s biggest challenges on Saturday at J.F. Hurley YMCA.

The family-friendly fair will feature health, addiction, education and family support to prepare families for the upcoming school year. Parents can attend information sessions about vaping, gang awareness and drugs. The fair will offer certified child care during the parenting sessions.

The fair also will have school supply giveaways, free food and door prizes.

The Community Action Teams began meeting in 2017 to help advance the vision of a “healthier community that provides a livable environment which is safer, with higher educational achievement, stronger workforce and employment opportunities, and better relationships between the community, the city and law enforcement.”

Salisbury residents determined the vision and focus points during five planning sessions during which they spoke to more than 20 community stakeholders, including workforce development organizations, religious institutions, the Salisbury Police Department, Rowan County Sheriff’s Office, Livingstone College, Catawba College and Salisbury-Rowan NAACP.

They determined the focus areas should be improving public safety, opportunities for children and youth, improving community relations and workforce development.

The fair will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at J.F. Hurley YMCA, 828 Jake Alexander Blvd. W. Free transit to and from the event will be available.
