Symphony GuildThe Salisbury-Rowan Symphony Guild Spring Luncheon was held April 29 at Trinity Oaks. David Hagy, Symphony conductor, gave a brief synopsis of the pops concert, held May 2.
A check was presented to Hagy as part of the guild’s pledge in support of the symphony.
The Festival of Spring Gardens Rose tour will be on May 16-17. Robert Myers and Jack Page spoke regarding their garden, which has more than 500 roses. Debbie Elliott reported that all of the gardens were fantastic and encouraged members to be sure to visit all gardens as well as the Rose Society’s show which is on the same weekend.
The annual membership drive will begin in August and members were encouraged to sign up promptly.
Piano guild
Auditions for the National Guild of Piano Teachers was held April 23-25 at First Baptist Church, China Grove, and St. James Lutheran Church, Rockwell.
Adjudicator was Loraine Ratoush of Greenville, S.C. She holds music degrees from the New England Conservatory of Boston, and the University of Chicago.

WRHS class of ’63On April 4, West Rowan High School’s class of 1963 held a celebration of its 46th anniversary of graduation at the Mocksville home of classmate Gail Carter Frye and her husband Pete.
This class was the first to have attended West Rowan all four high school years.
Sixty-five classmates and guests attended. Special guests included three former teachers: Erma Scarlette, Ruth Young and her husband, and Bob Rusher and his wife.
The group enjoyed a barbeque dinner with all the fixings prepared by the Fryes.
Clark Graham from California traveled the longest distance to attend the reunion.
A keepsake booklet with classmates’ information was dedicated to the 12 deceased classmates. Individual and group photos were taken for souvenir pictures of the occasion.
The planning committee included Jim Lyerly, Fran Stiller Lawson, Irene Poteat Yates, Bill Kepley, Ms. Frye, and Patsy Wilkinson Sexton.
The next reunion for the WRHS class of 1963 is planned in 2013 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of its graduation with the same classmates serving as the planning committee.
Spencer reunion
Graduates and friends of Spencer High School Class of 1949 met for a 60th anniversary reunion May 2.
Irene Ketchie Clark of Linwood brought homemade cookies. Berneice Ridenhour Jones of Clayton decorated her special Class of 1949 cake with small figures in traditional cap and gown. Albert Loflin and wife Coreta of Salisbury brought black and gold helium balloons, the school’s colors.
Sylvia Wiseman and husband Tom Harrell were hosts at their Summerfield home. Sandra Grant catered the luncheon.
Others attending were Sarah Barber McAdams and husband I.J,; Jack Swicegood and wife, Peg, and Betty Starnes Thompson, all of Salisbury, Ann Ridenhour McCoy and husband Taft of Albemarle, Eugene Pierce and wife Shirley of Fuquay-Varina, Lyle Scruggs and wife Martha of Mooresville, Jimmy Walton of Chesapeake, Va., Jessie Sue Burton Walser and husband Hugh of Taylors, S.C. and Fred Poole of Columbia, S.C. Poole’s wife Ingrid sent chocolate bars from Germany.
Pierce distributed comments on aging he collected during his 50 years of ministry.
Calls and notes came from graduates unable to attend this year: Barbara Campbell Ketner and Ramona Farrington Wilson of Salisbury, Sybil DeLoach and husband Charles Bruce of Mount Olive, Kirby Broughton of Greensboro, Robert Earnhardt of Holly Springs, Margaret Koon Murphy of Henderson, Nev., and Anne Morrison Carden of Hagerstown, Md.
Three classmates, Pat Shelby Vann, Talmage Harmon and Minnie Honbaier Burleson, died since last year’s reunion.
Genesis awardsThe Mooresville Genesis Center was recognized in Baltimore Md. and received six prestigious awards.
The facility was the proud recipient of: Clinical Excellence, Customer Service Excellence, Business Excellence, Quality Mix, Culture Change award, and the President’s award.
Administrator, Mary Ann Fisher, states she is extremely proud of the staff, residents and families. “The staff is the most loving, caring and dedicated people. They truly have a heart for the elderly and are determined to make a difference every day” says Fisher.
She further states that the residents, families and staff are like a big family and work together. “If you put the residents first in all your decisions then you will be successful. My hopes for the facilities future is to never lose focus of the residents. I want us to always look toward resident centered care.”
The Director of Nursing, Michelle Curry-Minter, leads the nursing department and is instrumental in the facility’s success clinically. The clinical excellence award is an awesome achievement.
Fisher and Minter have both been at the facility a little over five years.
Mooresville Center offers short stay rehab, long term care stays and assisted living. The facility has been a proud member of the community for 20 years.
