Area sports briefs: Lyerly, Ketner, Query make all-region team

Catawba’s Craige Lyerly, Ryan Query and Blake Ketner were named to the All-Southeast Region team.
Lyerly (East Rowan), a junior third baseman, is batting .449 with 13 homers and 26 steals.
Query (A.L. Brown) has enjoyed an amazing power surge late in the season. The senior is batting .376 with 19 homers and 70 RBIs.
Ketner (NW Cabarrus) has a 10-3 record, but the senior will miss the Southeast Regional after suffering a freak injury in practice. Struck by a flyball while running in the outfield, he broke a finger on his pitching hand.
Senior shortstop Chris Ahearn, Query and Lyerly are Catawba’s top candidates to be drafted next month.
* Belmont’s Daniel Wagner (South Rowan) went 3-for-8 as the Bruins swept a doubleheader from Tennessee-Martin. Wagner stole his 21st base of the season.
* Cy Young (East Rowan) was the winning pitcher for Wilkes Community College in a 10-2 victory over Stanly CC in the first round of the Region X tournament.Young is 11-2 and made the Region X all-conference first team. Wilkes’ Lance Emert (Davie) made the second team.
Wilkes’ Seth Graham received Coach of the Year honors.
– Minor leagues
Fort Myers pitcher Spencer Steedley (East) tossed 21/3 hitless innings with three strikeouts Tuesday to lower his ERA to 1.10.
* Mets prospect Brad Holt (Albemarle) struck out nine in 42/3 innings for St. Lucie.
* Round Rock’s Jeremy Johnson (Mooresville) took a loss Tuesday in a 12-3 setback against Fresno. He allowed three earned runs in four innings.
* Former Caldwell County phenom Madison Bumgarner, the Giants’ top pitching prospect, allowed one run in six innings in his Double-A debut for Connecticut.
* New Britain’s Zach Ward (A.L. Brown) gave up a run and two hits in an inning of work on Wednesday.
– Legion baseball
Mooresville’s American Legion team will hold a meeting at 3 p.m. on Sunday at Mooresville High.
– Middle School baseball
Southeast Middle got four hits from Chance Bowden and defeated Knox 11-3.
K.J. Pressley, Joseph Gray and Greg Tonneson each had two hits. Justin Evans picked up the win, pitching four innings. Austin McNeil threw the last three.
First-place Southeast (10-1, 8-1) visits West Rowan on Friday.
– State Games
Freshman pitcher Karley Harkey (North Iredell) and sophomore catcher Hope Smith (Mooresville) were named to the Region 7 State Games team.
Games will be played at UNCC and Mallard Creek High June 15-18.
– Overseas hoops
Terris Sifford (West) had 27 points and 19 rebounds in his latest outing in Italy.
– Prep basketball
Northern Guilford, which won the 3A boys basketball championship, has self-reported the use of ineligible players and will forfeit contests. Officially, the NCHSAA will not recognize a 3A champion for 2009.
– Carson cross country
Any girl that will be a student at Carson High in the fall of 2009 and is interested in running cross country needs to call coach Les-Lee Efird at 704-855-7297, ext. 2129.
Workouts will start in early summer.
– Catawba football camp
Catawba Football day camp dates are July 19-21: July 19 (3-6 p.m.), July 20 (9 a.m.-noon) and July 21 (9 a.m.-noon).

– Catawba baseball camp
Catawba’s Future Stars baseball camp at Newman Park will have two sessions.
Camps are June 29-July 2 and July 7-10. Cost for each is $100. Cost for both sessions is $175. Make checks payable to Catawba College Baseball.
Sessions are designed for ages 7-13.
Camp is 9 a.m.-noon daily. Drop-off begins at 8:30 a.m. Players should be picked up by 12:30 p.m. Contact assistant coach Steven Sawyer at 305-360-6699 or stsawyer@catawba.edu.
– Free baseball camp
The Kannapolis Police Department is hosting the fourth annual Wendy’s Summer Classic Baseball Camp. It’s free for ages 8 through middle school.
The camp is June 22ń25 from 8:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. daily. The camp is limited to 150 players. Register at the Kannapolis Police Department during business hours. Contact Lt. Bret Johnson at 704-920-4016.
– Tennis tournament
The Salisbury Rotary Tennis Championships will be held May 29-31 at City Park.
The entry deadline is May 22, and entries can be submitted by emailing a name, address, phone number, birthdate, events and possible doubles partner to rotarytennis@gmail.com. Players are limited to two events.
There is a $10 fee for the first junior event (ranging from 10-under to 18-under) and $5 (per person if doubles) for a second event. There is a $20 fee for the first adult event and $10 (per person if doubles) for a second event.
– Golf tournament
Golfers are needed for the Birdies for Breast Cancer tournament to be held on Monday, June 1, at Rocky River Golf Club. Proceeds from the tournament go to the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
The captain’s-choice tournament begins at noon with a shotgun start. It’s open to all interested and is $80 per golfer. The entry deadline is May 26. Registration forms are available at Rocky River Golf Club, Natural Swing, Auld Golf of Concord and Dick’s Sporting Goods.
– Hurley YMCA programs
Register through May 31 for a T-ball clinic for ages 4-6. Only 20 participants will be accepted.
* Register through June 26 for a T-ball league for boys and girls ages 4-7 and a coach pitch league for ages 6-9. Free cap and shirt.
* Register through June 12 for a sports combo camp that will include football in the morning and soccer in the afternoon, followed by swimming.
