ST. LOUIS ó Milwaukee Brewers second baseman Rickie Weeks will miss the rest of the season because of a tear in his left wrist, a severe setback for the NL Central leaders.
Weeks, who had a similar injury to his right wrist in 2006, hurt himself while striking out Sunday in St. Louis. He left Busch Stadium wearing a brace and underwent an MRI exam Monday that revealed the extent of the damage.
“We’re going to miss the guy,” manager Ken Macha said before Monday night’s game against the St. Louis Cardinals. “He was having a tremendous year, a great start. But nobody’s going to feel sorry for you.”
METS
LOS ANGELES ó New York Mets slugger Carlos Delgado will have surgery today on his right hip, and there’s no immediate word on when he might return to the lineup.
Delgado has a bone spur and a torn labrum in his hip.
The Mets activated Tim Redding off the disabled list to start late Monday night. Righty Nelson Figueroa was designated for assignment.
A spot in the Mets’ rotation opened up for Redding because of the tendinitis in Oliver Perez’s right knee and two poor starts by rookie Jonathon Niese, who was optioned to Triple-A Buffalo last week.
CARDINALS
ST. LOUIS ó The St. Louis Cardinals hope center fielder Rick Ankiel and pitcher Chris Carpenter both can rejoin the team Wednesday.
Ankiel bruised his right shoulder in a headfirst crash into the wall on May 4. He’s been playing in extended spring training games and is eligible to come off the disabled list Wednesday.
Carpenter, the 2005 NL Cy Young winner, has been on the 15-day DL since April 15 because of a strained muscle in his left ribcage.
ROCKIES
ATLANTA ó Colorado purchased right-hander Joel Peralta’s contract from Triple-A Colorado Springs to replace injured reliever Matt Daley.
Daley was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained left foot after he was injured Sunday in a fluke accident. The pitcher was running to back up home plate when umpire Bill Welke tossed the bat out of the way to clear space. It landed directly under Daley’s left foot on his next stride.
CUBS
CHICAGO ó Tom Ricketts, who heads his family’s nearly $900 million bid to buy the Chicago Cubs from Tribune Co., has turned to three banks for financing.
The banks that would finance $450 million are JPMorgan Chase, Citigroup and Bank of America, a person close to the family said.
YANKEES
NEW YORK ó Ready to return from the disabled list, New York Yankees reliever Brian Bruney blamed an 81/2-minute wait during an umpires’ video review for causing a strained flexor muscle in his right elbow.
Bruney went on the disabled list April 25, six days after he was warming up in the bullpen during the seventh inning when umpires checked video before upholding a home run by teammate Jorge Posada. Bruney then entered in the eighth and got three outs.
“Major League Baseball needs a way to figure out if it’s a home run or not,” Bruney said Monday. “It shouldn’t take 81/2 minutes, and I think that’s what screwed me up.”
Bruney pitched just once after the April 19 game, throwing an inning on April 21 before going on the DL. He said it was obvious to him from the first replay that Posada’s drive just over the right-field wall against Indians reliever Jensen Lewis was a home run.
He called the players’ association and learned only then that replays are provided to umpires from a central location. Bruney kept on warming up, not sure how long it would take for umpires to return to the field.
TWINS
NEW YORK ó Minnesota outfielder Delmon Young won’t rejoin the team until Friday at the earliest.
Young left the team last Friday before the start of a four-game series at the New York Yankees to attend to his ill mother in California and was placed on the family medical emergency list.
RANGERS
ARLINGTON, Texas ó Rangers closer Frank Francisco threw a bullpen session Monday and is scheduled to throw a simulated game Wednesday in Detroit.
Francisco, who hasn’t appeared in a game since May 6, went on the disabled list Saturday with right biceps tendinitis. He is eligible to come off the DL on Friday when the Rangers play in Houston.
