The Kannapolis Intimidators lost at Delmarva 2-1 on a bad-hop, two-run single with two out in the ninth inning on Sunday.
Kannapolis (20-23) took a 1-0 lead into the ninth behind pitcher Stephen Sauer’s seven shutout innings.
Kannapolis has lost four in a row.
* St. Lucie’s Brad Holt (Albemarle) struck out 10 in six innings and raised his record to 3-1 on Sunday in the Florida State League.
The New York Mets took Holt with the 33rd pick in the 2008 draft.
* David Thomas (Catawba) had a double and knocked in one run as Stockton beat Visalia 6-1 in the California League on Sunday.
– College baseball
Georgia Southern topped Elon 7-3 in the Southern Conference tournament championship game on Sunday.
* Belmont lost to Jacksonville 7-5 in the Atlantic Sun tournament to end its season. Belmont junior Daniel Wagner (South Rowan) stole his 24th base of the season, fifth-best total in school history.
– Junior American Legion
Rowan County opened with an 8-6 loss to Kernersville on Sunday. Many Junior Legion players on currently helping out on the Senior Legion team. Rowan plays at Newman Park against Kernersville on Friday.
* Sunday’s Carson-Mooresville Junior Legion game was suspended in the bottom of the first with Carson leading 1-0. Zach Gragg singled home Tripp Cross.
The game will be completed tonight.
* The Salisbury Cavornets Junior Legion team, made up of players from North Rowan and Salisbury, opened with an 11-0 victory at Stanly County.
Dakota Brown and Matt Laurens had three hits each for the Cavornets. Wes Barker had two hits. Patrick Snider pitched a four-hitter.
* The Cavornets (2-0) won 7-2 at Thomasville on Sunday. John Knox had three hits, while Jordan Fuller had two. Mason Jennings allowed four hits in five innings and got the win. Dusty Agner earned a save.The Cavornets are coached by Salisbury High coaches Scott Maddox and Justin Morgan, former North player Justin Mock and former SHS player Alex Britt.
Home games are played at Salisbury’s Robertson Stadium.
Salisbury is at Mocksville tonight.
– Senior American Legion
Rowan County has rescheduled its home game with Mocksville for June 29. That game was stopped by rain on Saturday.
* The Mocksville-Mooresville game originally scheduled for May 26 has been pushed back to June 8.
* Kernersville-Rowan and Mooresville-South Rowan were rained out on Sunday.
* Concord topped Kannapolis 9-5 in a game that won’t count in the division standings.
– College football
On Tuesday, Livingstone and J.C. Smith will announce a partnership in the Commemorative Football Classic to be played at Charlotte’s Memorial Stadium on Oct. 3 at 1 p.m.
In 1892, Livingstone and J.C. Smith met on the Livingstone campus in the first football game between historically black colleges .
– Coca-Cola 600
Gates open at 9 a.m. today for the 50th Coca-Cola 600. The green flag is scheduled for noon.
The race was postponed Sunday night by rain. Tickets purchased for Saturday will be honored today.
– Prep track
New Bern won the 4A boys state track meet at North Carolina A&T on Saturday.
Davie’s Ricky Bell tied for eighth in the discus with an effort of 141 feet, 8 inches.
Southeast Raleigh won the girls meet.
– Hoops Unlimited camp
The 16th Annual Hoops Unlimited Basketball Camp for boys and girls will be held at two sites.
Camp at Richfield Elementary will be held June 15-18 for rising 2nd-5th graders and June 22-25 for rising 6th-9th graders.
Camp at Erwin Middle will be held July 6-9 for rising 2nd-5th graders and July 13-16 for rising 6th-9th graders.
The cost of the all-day camp is $95 and includes a camp T-shirt and “all you can eat” lunch daily. For a brochure or other information, contact camp director Rick Roseman at 704-279-7334.
