Area sports briefs: Atwell helps Crusaders stay alive

Patrick Atwell (South Rowan) helped Belmont Abbey stay alive in the Division II World Series in Cary on Monday.
In his four at-bats, Atwell had a sac bunt, two walks and an eighth-inning bunt single that scored a run in a 5-4 win that eliminated Grand Valley State.Belmont Abbey (39-25) led 4-0 after eight innings, but Grand Valley scored four runs in the top of the ninth. Spencer Sabol had the game-winning hit in the bottom of the ninth.
Belmont Abbey plays another elimination game on Wednesday night against Mesa State (44-14).
– Minor leagues
Delmarva finished off a four-game sweep of the Kannapolis Intimidators with a 4-3 victory on Memorial Day.
Baltimore Orioles outfielder Luke Scott, on a minor-league rehab stint, went 2-for-2 with a homer. Kannapolis (20-24) scored twice in the ninth inning.
* Chicago White Sox prospect Gordon Beckham had a big day for Birmingham in Double-A on Monday.
Beckham, who played for the Intimidators late last season, homered and knocked in five runs against Tennessee. He is batting .309.
* New Britain’s Zach Ward (A.L. Brown) took a loss in relief Monday. He allowed four hits, three walks and two earned runs in 11/3 innings of a 5-4 setback against Binghamton.n American Legion
Rowan County’s game against Eastern Randolph was rained out Monday. The South Rowan-Kannapolis game also was rained out.
South and Lexington have moved a game that was originally scheduled for tonight to Sunday.
Early Rowan schedules showed a game at Stanly tonight, but that one has been moved to June 16.
– Junior Legion
Salisbury lost 9-7 at Mocksville on Monday.
Mocksville led 7-2 when Salisbury rallied for five runs to tie the score in the sixth. Mocksville broke the tie in the bottom half of the inning.
“It wasn’t a pretty game to watch, that’s for sure, but I was happy with the way we battled against a lot of experienced guys,” Salisbury coach Scott Maddox said.
* Carson-Mooresville was rained out Monday.
– Prep baseball
North Buncombe and Tuscola will play their 3A Western semifinal game on a neutral field tonight.
North Buncombe earned the right to be the host team but has no lights, and the NCHSAA specifies playoff games should start at 7 p.m. The teams have agreed to play at A.C. Reynolds High in Asheville. Reynolds has lights and an infield tarp.
– Catawba camps
Catawba football day camp dates are July 19-21: July 19 (3-6 p.m.), July 20 (9 a.m.-noon) and July 21 (9 a.m.-noon).

* Catawba’s Future Stars baseball camp at Newman Park will have two sessions.
Camps are June 29-July 2 and July 7-10. Cost for each is $100. Cost for both sessions is $175. Make checks payable to Catawba College Baseball.

– McCanless Couples
The McCanless Couples played nine holes Sunday in a captain’s choice format.
Gene and Mary Seaford shot 35 and won in a scorecard playoff with Matt and Liz Murphy.
Mark Haviland and Kim Brouilette shot 36. Walt Kincaid made the longest putt on No. 18.
