Salisbury won the CCC’s Charles England Excellence in Athletics Award based on overall performance.
Salisbury won state titles this school year in girls tennis, girls basketball and boys track.
Ledford and West Davidson finished behind the Hornets.
* East Davidson’s Anna Freeman and Lexington’s Teland Todd were named CCC athletes of the year.
* Providence Grove received the CCC’s Sportsmanship Award.
– CCC girls track
North Rowan’s Teaunna Cuthbertson was named CCC Track Athlete of the Year.
Salisbury’s Katherine Shields was runner-up.
Salisbury’s David Johnson was named CCC Coach of the Year for leading the Hornets to the conference championship. North Rowan’s Robert Steele was runner-up. The Cavaliers finished second.North Rowan’s Yasarian Bush, Dirika Mitchell, Tatiana Banks, Corbin Bennett, Shaquille Bagley, Tylesa Dickerson, Akevia Charleston, Abril Ellis and Tenesha Dickerson joined Cuthbertson on the All-CCC team.
Salisbury’s Dasia McGill, Shi-Heria Shipp, Alisha Bradshaw, Melonie Ramos, Emily Shields, Brooke Johnson, Katelyn Horning, Symone Knox, Najwa Allison, Kia Rice and Samantha Saulters joined Katherine Shields on the All-CCC team.
– CCC boys track
Salisbury’s A.J. Ford was named CCC Track Athlete of the Year. Teammate Nick Summers was runner-up.
North Rowan’s Matt Price was named CCC Coach of the Year. He guided North to a second-place finish.
Salisbury’s Darien Rankin, Philip Tonseth, Marqui Ross, Tyler Downs, Joseph Figueroa, Hanson Saryee and Martin Hosch-Cathcart joined Ford and Summers on the All-CCC team.
North Rowan’s Garland Archie, Haussen Walser, Jesse Brown, Cameron Mallett, Samuel Starks, Titus King and Lathan Charleston made the All-CCC team.
– CCC boys golf
Salisbury’s Roy Dixon was the CCC Golfer of the Year, while Salisbury’s Dale Snyder was CCC Coach of the Year.
Salisbury’s Alex Nianouris, Troy Beaver and Clark Alcorn joined Dixon on the All-CCC team.
Salisbury was league champion.
– CCC boys tennis
Salisbury’s Chris Myers was named CCC Coach of the Year for boys tennis.
Salisbury shared the league championship with Ledford and Lexington.
Salisbury’s Steven Page, Alan Lebowitz and Austin Flynn made the All-CCC team.
– Minor leagues
Ft. Myers lost to Tampa 8-3 on Thursday, but Spencer Steedley (East Rowan) had another good outing.
Steedley pitched 11/3 innings. He allowed two hits and no runs and struck out two. His ERA is 0.78.
* Jeremy Johnson (Mooresville) pitched six shutout innings for Round Rock in a 9-1 victory against Salt Lake. Johnson (3-3) allowed three hits and struck out three.
* The Kannapolis Intimidators swept a doubleheader at Hagerstown on Thursday, winning 6-2 and 5-3.
Seth Loman was 3-for-3 with a three-run homer in the nightcap.
– Wood bat leagues
Gastonia’s Micah Jarrett (East Rowan, Wake Forest) went 3-for-3 in a 5-4 loss against Forest City as the Coastal Plain League opened play on Wednesday.
– Middle school baseball
Erwin’s baseball team beat West Rowan 16-2 on Wednesday.
Hunter Brooks had three hits for the Eagles (7-5), while Dalton Bost had two. The winning pitcher was Holden Ingold.
Hunter Teeter and Taylor Garczynski led West with two hits each.
– Prep baseball
Lake Norman will play at Tuscola tonight in the first round of the 3A Western Championship series.
Games 2 and 3 (if necessary) both will be played at Lake Norman on Saturday.
* Randy Martin has been named the new coach at West Iredell.
Martin, a West Iredell grad, has been an assistant at West Iredell for many years. He also was head coach at Statesville in 2005-06.
Buck Gatton recently resigned as West Iredell’s coach.
– American Legion
The South Rowan-Kannapolis game scheduled for Thursday was rained out.
Rowan County is scheduled for a league game tonight at short-handed Mooresville. South Rowan is at Concord. Kannapolis has a home game scheduled with Mocksville.
* The Carson-Lexington Junior Legion game rained out on Wednesday will be played June 27.
– Youth track
Marianne Abdalah, 10, won a gold medal and a silver medal at the Johnson-Riley Track and Field Challenge held recently at Reagan High.
Abdalah ran personal bests in two races. She won the 1500 in 5:43 and was second in the 800 in 2:46.7.
* Sprinter Payton Russell took home three silver medals. She was second in the 100 (14.5), 200 (29.01) and 400 (1:07).
– College golf
Virginia’s Will Collins (Salisbury) shot 77-76 ó 153 in the first two rounds of the National Championships at Inverness in Toledo, Ohio.
Virginia was 25th after two rounds.
– College track
Heading into regional competition this weekend in Greensboro, N.C. State’s Jason Jones (East Rowan) ranked 34th among the nation’s shot putters.
– Middle school soccer
The Rowan County tournament begins Saturday at East Rowan. Admission is $5.
– Golf fundraiser
West Rowan’s basketball program will hold a fundraising golf tournament at Foxwood on Saturday, June 13.
The format is four-man captain’s choice. The cost is $35 per player. There will be a shotgun start at 1 p.m.
– Overseas basketball
Terris Sifford (West Rowan) had 18 points and 21 rebounds in his final game in the playoffs in Italy.
