SALISBURY — The two wastewater spills on Sunday shouldn’t have any adverse environmental impacts, according to Salisbury-Rowan Utilities director Jim Behmer.

Because of heavy rain on Sept. 16, the Southside pump station on Kluttz Street in Rockwell discharged 304,080 gallons during a span of about 11 hours.

The Salisbury-Rowan Wastewater Treatment Plant on Heiligtown Road in East Spencer spilled about 392,309 gallons of wastewater and lasted eight hours. Behmer said the wastewater had gone through some treatment.

SRU attempted to pump up the wastewater, but it was mostly rainwater.

Behmer said wastewater spills are caused by adverse rain events, grease in the sewer system or if a pipe or lift fails.

Since the river and lake levels are beginning to crest, Behmer said they are out of danger for another wastewater spill.

Behmer also said Third Street-Hollywood Drive in Spencer will reopen today.
