Area Sports Briefs: East soccer wins

East Rowan’s boys soccer team won against Albemarle, 5-4, on Wednesday in a non-conference matchup.

Alex Kaligeromitros scored four goals and has 25 for the season.

Reuben Leslie scored a goal. Jaxon  Mastranunzio and  Dalton Vandevere had assists.

The Mustangs have won three out of four, the best stretch for the program since 2009.

Jaxon Wheeler scored a goal for Carson in a 3-1 non-conference loss to Robinson on Wednesday.

West Rowan put up a fight in a 2-0 loss to Cox Mill.

West’s jayvees lost to Cox Mill, 3-0.

South Rowan lost to Central Davidson, 4-0, in a Central Carolina Conference contest.

The game was scoreless at halftime.

Prep volleyball

West Rowan hosts Carson today in a big volleyball match in the North Piedmont Conference.

Both teams are 11-1 overall and 2-0 in the NPC.

The jayvee match starts at 4:30 p.m., with the varsity match starting around 6 p.m.

South Rowan has a big home Central Carolina Conference match with Ledford today.

South (11-3, 9-1)  has won eight in a row since losing to West Rowan on Aug. 27.

Ledford handed South its only CCC loss of the season with a sweep in Wallburg on Aug. 23.

Salisbury (4-8, 3-8) lost a CCC match to West Davidson on Wednesday 25-13, 25-14 and 26-24.

Cassie Riggs had 20 assists and Ashley Johnson had 15 kills for the Green Dragons (11-4, 9-2).

Prep tennis

In Carson’s 9-0 North Piedmont Conference win against Statesville on Tuesday, Maci Cooper, Lindsey Conrad, Carleigh Perry, Jadyn Kirpatrick, Alison Sloop and Quinlann Watson won singles matches.

Cooper/Kirkpatrick, Conrad/Sloop and Perry/Watson won in doubles for the Cougars (4-2, 2-2).

8th-grade football

  Knox won 28-0 against Erwin.

JyMikaah Wells had 15 carries for 280 yards and four touchdowns.  Johni Rippy had a 2-point conversion.

Anthony Dodd had several strong tackles and runs. Amarie Johnson  had several strong runs with a 15-yd carry.

Basketball phenom

Athan Gill, of Salisbury, was selected as the most outstanding defensive player in a Junior Phenom Basketball Camp, last Saturday in Tennessee. Gill was playing for Asheville Game Changer, coached by Shane Harper.

Gill is an 8th-grader at West Rowan Middle School.
