EAST SPENCER — Residents will experience a few hours without water on Monday, town officials said as they cut off old water lines and reconnect new ones. The outage is part of the ongoing water project, which began late last year.
Town Administrator F.E. Isenhour said about half the town will be without water from 8:30 a.m. to noon in around some of the following streets: Heiligtown Road, Andrews Street, Shaver Street, Tanglewood Drive and Division Avenue.
Isenhour said the town expressly requested that if the water had to be out that it only be for a few hours.
“We will have to cut lines off and re-tie some together,” Isenhour said.
In December 2014, the town was awarded over $2.4 million in state and federal funds to reduce water losses by providing a looped system with a new water line following Choate Road to the Aldi Distribution Center property on Old Union Church Road.
Prior to that time, the town had extremely high water rates, so much so that town officials requested a study to determine how they could alleviate the high cost to residential and commercial customers.
The town began a project in 2008 with the U.S. Department of Agriculture to replace old water lines that were leaking, but the system continued to have water loss. Isenhour would later say not all of the work was done in that project, leaving the town with poor water pressure, leaks and value issues.
In addition to addressing water pressure, the project saw the installation of new valves and new hydrants.
