CHAPEL HILL ó One of North Carolina’s starting offensive linemen has decided to leave the team.
School officials said Thursday that Aaron Stahl would forego his final season of eligibility and was giving up football.
Stahl said in a statement issued by the school that “it’s time for me to move forward with the next phase of my life.”
He played in 13 games last season and started six at either center or guard. He broke his thumb in the win over Miami, switched to guard for the rest of the season, had shoulder surgery in January and missed the Tar Heels’ spring practices.
He played four seasons at North Carolina and graduated in May.
Coach Butch Davis praised Stahl for changing positions and said he wishes him “nothing but success.”

GREENVILLE ó The latest football showdown between two in-state rivals in North Carolina now has a kickoff time, and will be nationally broadcast.
Officials announced Thursday that the game between East Carolina and North Carolina, scheduled for Sept. 19 in Chapel Hill, will have a noon kickoff and will be telecast by either ESPN or ESPN2.
The Tar Heels are hosting the Pirates for the first time since 2001. North Carolina traveled to Greenville for games in 2003 and 2007.
