Area sports briefs: RAC swimmers taking next step

Five RAC YMCA swimmers are college-bound.
East Rowan’s Tanner Lowman will attend Florida State on a swimming scholarship.
Lowman set the North Carolina state high school record in the 100 breaststroke. He had a high school All-American time standard and was third at the YMCA nationals in the event.
Salisbury’s Garrison Stevens will attend Clemson. She has been awarded the Academic Recruiting Scholarship and plans to swim for the Tigers as a freshman. Stevens was third in the 100 breaststroke at the 2A state meet.
East Rowan’s Will Stokes is headed to Wingate, where he will become a member of the Bulldogs’ swim team.
Stokes is the recipient of the Trustee Scholarship and will be a member of Wingate’s First-Year Leadership Program while working toward a degree in pharmacy. He qualified for the 3A state meet in the 100 breaststroke and in relays.
South Davidson’s Caroline Smith will also join FSU on a swimming scholarship.
Smith set the North Carolina state high school record in the 100 backstroke and also holds the YMCA nationals record in the 400 freestyle. She had high school All-American times in the 100 backstroke and 200 IM.
Cannon School’s Alex Ramdin will attend American University. She is receiving the Frederick Douglas Merit Scholarship and plans on majoring in communications.
Ramdin has qualified for the YMCA nationals for six years and was a member of her private school state championship team all four years. She won the 100 breaststroke and participated in first-place relays during her career.n West track awards
West Rowan honored Leslie Pence and Trey Mashore as indoor track MVPs. Trey Cuthbertson was hurdles MVP, and Tevin Gregory won the Falcon Award.
West’s girls outdoor honorees were Amber Holloway (track MVP), Pence (distance MVP) and Desere Cross (field events MVP).
Boys awards went to Tim Flanagan (track MVP), Ershawn Wilder (field events MVP) and A.J. Little (Falcon Award).
– Legion baseball
Stanly County defeated Mooresville 7-4 in American Legion baseball in a game stopped after 41/2 innings on Thursday.
Rain started shortly after the contest got under way.
Billy Nantz hit a two-run homer for the Moors. Brantley Horton had two hits. Keith Little took the loss on the mound.
Jordan Sells led the offensive attack for Stanly.
* The Kannapolis-Western Forsyth game was cancelled because of rain and will not be made up. The teams also agreed to cancel Kannapolis’ game at Western Forsyth scheduled for June 29.
* Mooresville is scheduled to play at South Rowan tonight.
* Rowan returns to action Saturday at Wilkes.
– Minor Leagues
Thursday’s game between the Kannapolis Intimidators and West Virginia Power was rained out. The teams will play a doubleheader at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium on Saturday with the first game starting at 6:05 p.m.
Fireworks will take place after the conclusion of the second of two seven-inning contests.
– Rowan Masters
Corrected information was submitted by Warrior Golf Club regarding the Rowan Masters.
The low 31 qualifying scores and defending champion Ronnie Eidson will make up the field.
Qualifying is June 20.
Match play is June 26-28.The entry fee is $60 for non-members and $40 for members.
Entry includes green fee, cart and range balls for the qualifying round. Fees for tournament rounds will be $13 for members and $20 for non-members. There will also be a practice round available to non-members for $20 the week before qualifying and the week prior to the tournament.
In addition to a trophy, the champion receives a $300 gift certificate. Second, third and fourth places also receive prizes.
– Corbin Hills golf
The Corbin Hills Ladies competed their Grace Rodgers Spring Handicap tournament.
Cindy Carmazzi won low net for the two-day event. She was followed by Beth Calhoun and Karla Swanson. Phyllis Durland had low gross.
– Carson cross country
