Carson’s volleyball team won a big five-set match with South Iredell on Tuesday to get back into a three-way race in the North Piedmont Conference.

Carson’s  25-16, 25-16, 22-25, 20-25 and 15-7 win means a tie for first place with South Iredell and West Rowan.

Jaden Vaughn had 23 kills, 19 digs and three blocks for the Cougars (13-2, 4-1). Mallory Weast had four aces, 26 digs and 19 kills.

Kary Hales had 41 digs and 41 serve-receives. Nancy Gamewell had nine kills and five blocks. Grace Thomas had two aces and 48 assists. Katie Blackwell had four aces and 16 digs.

West Rowan (13-2, 4-1) bounced back from Monday’s loss at South Iredell to beat NPC foe Statesville 25-18, 25-17 and 25-12.

Tori Hester had 21 kills and 11 digs for West. KK Dowling had six kills and 11 digs. Ava Link had seven kills and 21 assists. Carly Stiller had  six kills. Hannah Pratt had 13 digs.

East Rowan lost to North Iredell 25-16, 25-12 and 25-13 in NPC play on Tuesday.

Baleigh Hill had 18 digs and 40 serve-receives for the Mustangs. Hannah Larson had seven kills,  while Olivia Wright had five kills and nine digs.

Salisbury  (5-9, 4-9) bounced back from Monday’s loss to Lexington and upset Central Davidson 25-23, 25-19 and 25-19.

South Rowan (14-3, 12-1) stayed on top in the Central Carolina Conference race by topping Oak Grove 25-20, 25-11 and 25-15.

Payton Black had 12 digs for the Raiders. Ashlyn Faw had 10 digs. Janiya Downs had 13 kills. Kira Rymer had 14 kills. Anna Rymer had 16 assists.

  

High school soccer

A.L. Brown (10-2-1, 0-1) lost to Cox Mill  in South Piedmont Conference soccer on Tuesday, 2-0.

Davie County (1-11, 0-1) lost to R.J. Reynolds, 4-1, on Tuesday in a Central Piedmont Conference matchup.

Jayvee volleyball

South Rowan won against Oak Grove 22-25, 25-15 and 15-7 on Tuesday.

Makali Strong had 10 digs and seven kills. Kali Nelson had 10 digs. Kendall Walter had seven kills. Emma Owens had 11 assists for the Raiders (11-6, 9-4).

Carson lost to South Iredell 25-23 and 25-21.

Tate Barger had 12 assists and three blocks. Alayna Slusser had three aces,  11 digs and six kills. Ava Corriher had three kills. Madison Berry had three kills and two blocks. Jillian Dunn had 20 serve-receives and 15 digs.

Jayvee football

Alex Summers threw three touchdown passes to lead Davie County to a 27-14 win  against Carson in a makeup game postponed by Hurricane Florence.

Summers connected twice with MJ Holleman and once with Isaiah Lytton. Davie (4-1) also got a rushing TD from DeVonte Lyerly.

Carson got a 5-yard scoring run from Javon Smith a 4-yard scoring run by Aiden Kirchbaum. Andrw Beaver kicked two PATs.

The Cougars (3-2) led at halftime, 14-13.

High school tennis

West Rowan’s girls tennis team won at Statesville, 8-1, in Tuesday’s North Piedmont Conference match.

West (12-1, 6-1) is in first place in the NPC. South Iredell and Carson have two losses each.

  Payton Holt, Madison Smith, Lacy Waggoner, Skylar Jahnke, Mira White  and Gracie Wise won  singles matches for the Falcons.

West’s winning doubles teams were Holt/Waggoner and Smith/Wise.

The Greyhounds won at No. 3 doubles.

West Rowan will host East Rowan in an NPC match on Thursday.

Carson (6-2, 4-2) beat South Iredell, 5-4, on Tuesday and beat West Rowan last week, so the Cougars have climbed back in the race after a slow start.

Local golf

Fifty-seven GARS members played at Lexington Golf Club this week.

Low ‘A’ Flight player was Red McClain with a net of 62.71.

Low ‘B’ Flight player was Frank Masingo with a net of 63.73.

Low ‘C’ Flight player was Mike Sides with a net of 60.83.

Low ‘D’ Flight player was Floyd McVey with a net of 63.61.

Ken Miller, 83, shot a 79: and Larry Petrea, 67, shot a 67, which was low gross score. Petrea made an eagle on the par-5 No. 8 hole.

  Sides had low net score.

College golf

DAVIDSON — James Madison won a 13-team collegiate golf tournament, held Sunday-Tuesday at River Run Country Club.

Richmond finished seventh, as Salisbury’s Michael Childress (Cannon) saw his first collegiate action. Childress shot a 233 (82-75-76), tying for 56th overall.

Walker Cress, of Concord, finished sixth overall (213) to lead JMU, which won by one stroke over Furman. Rounding out the top five teams were Davidson, Charlotte and Temple.

Keller Harper, of Furman, was the medalist, firing a 207 (68-69-70).

BRISTOL, Tenn. —  Catawba’s men are in seventh place out of eight teams after Monday’s first round of the King University Invitational Men’s Golf Tournament.

Catawba posted a round of 300 to trail leader Anderson by 16 strokes.

  Tanner Bibey and freshman Hunter Donahue  shot 72 to lead Catawba. Tyler Mulkey (North Rowan) shot 77. Mack Sheppard shot 79. Bryson Sprinkle (East Rowan) shot 82.

College volleyball

Catawba lost at Lincoln Memorial, 3-1, on Tuesday.

Morgan Hester (Carson) had 33 assists and 11 digs.  Kylie Morgan had 11 kills, while Kimberly Hurtado had 10. Abby Benton had 22 digs.

NFL

Javon Hargrave (North Rowan) had two tackles for the Pittsburgh Steelers in a Monday night win against Tampa Bay.

Tennis benefit

The Salisbury Open Charity  Tennis Tournament will be held  Sept. 28-30  at Salisbury High  and  City Park tennis courts.

Half the proceeds benefit the Salisbury High  boys and girls programs,

  The other half  will be split between Overton Elementary Student Council and HembyChildren’s Hospital in Charlotte, in honor of Colin Donaldson,   a freshman at Salisbury High.

5K race

On Thursday,Oct, 11 at 6 p.m., Overton Elementary will host its first annual Explore the Greenway 5K. The cost for the 5K for non-staff or students is $25, and includes a T-shirt if registered by Sept. 29.

Race day registration is $30. For staff and students the cost is $5 and $15 with a T-shirt.

The race begins in front of Knox Middle School . Race day registration begins at 5 p.m. on the track at Knox. Register online at www.salisburyrowanrunners.org.

High school football

Changes to the NCHSAA football schedule:

The end of the regular season will now be on Nov. 9 instead of Nov. 2.

Seedings will be announced on Nov. 10.

The first round of the playoffs will be on Nov. 16.

Championships will now be played on Dec. 14-15, instead of Dec. 8.

College football

Nick Leverett, a 300-pound junior who played in high school at North Rowan and Concord, started at left tackle for North Carolina Central in Saturday’s loss to Duke.

Sandon McCoy (A.L. Brown) has played in  four games for Army and has three carries for 19 yards.

Winston-Salem State’s Jarvis Morgan (West Rowan) has played in two games. He had a reception against Catawba.

WSSU’s Najee Tucker (West Rowan) made two tackles in Saturday’s 27-19 loss to Virginia Union.

Eric Gibson (North Rowan) has been in on 11 tackles in Catawba’s three games. Steven Thurston (North Rowan) has been in on seven stops, while Josh Moses (East Rowan) has been in on two tackles.

Mid. school tennis

Erwin defeated China Grove, 8-1, in boys tennis played in China Grove.

Ryan Brady, Joseph Boehm, Owen Kesler, Anthony Grimes and Hunter Moore won singles matches for the Eagles.

A. Carter won for the Red Devils.

Winning doubles teams for Erwin were Brady/Kesler, Boehm/Schappell and Grimes/Moore.
