Communities in Schools

SALISBURY — Communities in Schools of Rowan County has been awarded a $32,500 North Carolina School Safety Grant.

The purpose of the awards are for community partners to increase school safety by providing evidence-based and evidence-informed crisis services and training to help students develop healthy responses to trauma and stress.

CIS-Rowan will partner with local agencies, including the Terrie Hess House, to offer Triple P Parenting services to families in eight Rowan-Salisbury schools.

Triple P Parenting offers parents simple and practical strategies to help them build strong, healthy relationships, manage their children’s behavior and prevent problems from developing.

“Improving the behavior of children must be a partnership between schools and families,” said Ron Turbyfill, executive director of CIS-Rowan and a retired educator. “A united approach, giving parents help in improving behaviors, will lead to a calm and nurturing environment in both school and homes.”

Triple P Parenting is effective with children from preschool through high school. Trained facilitators will be engaged with families in workshop settings for groups and individuals. The grant will make workshops available at no cost to parents.

“CIS-Rowan is dedicated to the support of students and their families in our schools,” said Turbyfill.
