The J.C. Price High School Sports Hall of Fame Awards Banquet will be held Sunday, Oct. 7, at 4 p.m. at the Salisbury Civic Center.

Inductees are Shirley Holt Reddick, James Hopkins,    Clinton Howie,  Carolyn Phillips Williams, Robert “Bob” Phillips, Lillian Propst Brooks and Sylvia McCrary Brown Jordan (posthumously).

In memory of founders Rufus Little, John Mackey and Fred Evans, the committee will present its third annual Founders Award to a Price graduate who has made an outstanding contribution to the Salisbury community.

Tickets may be purchased from committee members Carl Marlin, Brenda Cowan, Larry Connor, Wayne Woodruff and Raemi Evans. No tickets will be sold at the door.

High school tennis

Salisbury’s girls tennis team returned to the courts after a rain-plagued week and won at North Davidson, 8-1, to stay on top in the Central Carolina Conference.

Meredith Burton, Abby Campion, Margaret Thurman, Skye Mowery and Sophie Chmiel won in singles for the Hornets (14-1, 13-1).

Campion and Mowery won tiebreakers after splitting the first two sets.

Campion/Burton, Thurman/Mowery and Chmiel/Sutton Webb were doubles winners.

High school golf

East Rowan and South Iredell shot 127s in Monday’s North Piedmont Conference match at McCanless.

South Iredell’s Maria Franco shot 39.

This was the last NPC match of the season. East  honored its seniors. Camryn Corriher (41), Carmen Fraley (42), Victoria Lewis (44) and Hailey Fesperman (46) led the Mustangs.

Carson’s Sophia Brown shot 48.

High school soccer

Salisbury survived another hotly contested match on Monday, winning  a   Central Carolina Conference match in a shootout.

The Hornets won at West Davidson, 2-1, with a 4-2 margin in the shootout.

Salisbury’s first four of Jack Fisher, Tony Figueroa, Christopher Portillo  and Josh Faulkner converted their penalties.

“This was   the first time in my 18 years we’ve gone to regular season conference penalty kicks,” SHS coach Matt Parrish said.

Salisbury took the lead in the first half on a corner kick taken by Dennis Anaya.  Senior William Austin scored his first goal of the season.

West Davidson leveled the match seven minutes into the second half.

The score remained tied throughout  regulation and a pair of five-minute overtime periods.

Salisbury  (12-2-1, 8-1-1) again played without the defensive services of Luke Holland and lost defensive starter Shawn Henderson in the first half.

Salisbury got excellent play from Hugo Trujillo and Angel Quintero  (the defensive replacements), Anaya and David Holden.

Salisbury is at Lexington on Wednesday and home on Thursday versus Thomasville in makeup contest.

West Rowan lost to North Iredell, 1-0, in North  Piedmont Conference action on Monday.

Carson lost to Statesville, 3-0.

Alex Kalogeromitros scored his 31st goal for East Rowan in a 9-1 NPC loss to South Iredell.

Ben Shoemaker and Mason Benge had 20 saves.

Logan Carter scored on a free kick for South Rowan in a 5-1 CCC loss to Ledford.

Jayvee soccer

West Rowan’s jayvee soccer team beat North Iredell, 3-1. Brian Gutierrez scored two goals, and Sergio Reyna had one.

South Rowan AD Angie Chrismon was honored as the  Charlie Adams Distinguished Service Award winner for District 6.

College golf

Senior Alexandria Bare   (South Rowan) shot 3-over 75 in the first round of the   Super Regional Preview in Cleveland, Tenn.

College basketball

Davidson County Community College will hold its  annual  Blue/Gray game and  dunk contest at Brinkley Gym on Sunday, Oct. 7,  at  6 p.m. Admission is free.

College volleyball

UNC Wilmington volleyball returned to action Sunday for first time after Florence. Won 3-0 vs. Delaware. Michaela White (Carson) had 13 assists and 10 digs.

College football

  Mars Hill   receiver Craig Rucker and QB Austin Brown were the SAC Co-Offensive Players of the Week. Lenoir-Rhyne linebacker Clayton Horn is the Defensive Player of the Week. Newberry kicker Shea Rodgers is the Special Teams Player of the Week.

Local golf

In the American Legion  “Gene Auten” Memorial Golf Classic  held at Corbin Hills, the First Flight was won by Gary Miller, Randy Bingham, Rick Ridenhour and Stan Honeycutt with a 55.

Winning the Second Flight with a score of 61 was the team of Bryan Burke, Gary Parrish, Andrew Burke and Dylan Carpenter.

Jim Duncan, James Taylor, Buddy Cline and Ken Parr shot 69 to win the Third Flight and donated prize money back to the Legion.

Longest putt winner was  Dusty Holder. Closest to pin winners were Randy Neill (No. 2),  Holder (No. 5), Greg Creeger (No. 13) and Rick Adams (No. 16).

Susan Wydner and David & Azalee Huneycutt placed second.

Bev Cobb had longest putt and Calvin Smith had closest to pin.

CFL

Romar Morris (Salisbury) was effective returning punts on Friday. He had 69 yards on seven returns  in Calgary’s  38-16 win against Toronto.

Fishing

Charlotte’s Craig Chambers won the T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League North Carolina Division tournament on Lake Norman Sunday with a two-day   catch of 10 bass, weighing 26 pounds, 3 ounces. Chambers won $4,944.
