Area Sports Briefs: LC Hall of Fame class to be inducted

The Livingstone College Athletic Hall of Fame will induct the class of 2018 tonight in the William J. Trent Gymnasium.
The class includes Reggie Miller (1991, football), Moses Gordon (2006, football), Jason Ocean (2006, (football), Bryan Aycoth 2012 (track and field) and the 1997 football team that won the CIAA championship.
Reggie Miller, was a four-year starter in football, a team captain and All-CIAA. He had 13 sacks in 1990 and was a four-time Presidential Scholar Award winner.
Gordon was an All-America linebacker and was 2004 team MVP.
An All-America linebacker, Ocean led the CIAA in tackles as a freshman with 119 in eight games. He was named the CIAA Rookie of the Year.
He’s in the Livingstone record book with 516 career tackles, 74 tackles for loss and 20 sacks.

Aycoth, a West Rowan graduate, was a three-time CIAA javelin champion and was Livingstone’s 2010 Male Athlete of the Year.
He still holds the CIAA record in the javelin.

The 1997 Blue Bears football team was the first to win the CIAA Championship and played in the Pioneer Bowl.
High school volleyball
South Rowan won 25-10, 25-14 and 25-20 against East Rowan in a non-conference match on Wednesday. Payton Black had 15 digs. Kira Rymer had 14 digs and nine kills. Anna Rymer had 16 assists. Janiya Downs had 14 kills and eight blocks. Ashlyn Faw had eight digs for the Raiders (16-4).

In Tuesday’s loss to Carson, Olivia Wright had eight kills and eight digs for East Rowan (5-11, 0-7 NPC). Baleigh Hill had 24 digs.

Salisbury (6-11) honored seniors and won a five-set, non-conference match with South Davidson (1-15) on Wednesday.
The Hornets rallied to win 22-25, 22-25, 25-12, 27-25 and 15-10.
Madelynn Castor had six kills for SHS in Tuesday’s loss to Ledford.

In North Piedmont Conference matches tonight, first-place West Rowan (15-2, 6-1) has a big match at North Iredell (9-4, 4-3). Carson (14-3, 5-2) hosts Statesville, and East Rowan is at South Iredell.

South Rowan is tied for first in the Central Carolina Conference and plays at Lexington tonight.
Jayvee volleyball
South Rowan won against East Rowan 25-10 and 25-18 on Wednesday.
Zoie Miller had five assists for the Raiders (13-7). Emma Owens had five assists. Kendall Walter had four aces. Kali Nelson had four kills.
High school golf
Oak Grove easily won the Central Carolina Conference championship on Wednesday, taking the title by 30 strokes.
West Davidson was runner-up. Scores: West Davidson 274, Ledford 279, Oak Grove 280, North Davidson 295, Central Davidson 315, East Davidson 397
Ledford’s Lauren Hacklet led individuals with a 75.

The Rowan County Championships will be held today at 1 p.m. at McCanless. East Rowan is the defending champion.
High school tennis
Carson won against East Rowan, 8-1, on Tuesday in North Piedmont Conference action. The Cougars (9-2, 7-2) close the regular season at home today against Statesville.
East Rowan ends the regular season today at South Iredell.
West Rowan (14-1, 8-1) plays for an outright conference championship today at fourth-place North Iredell.
A West loss and a Carson victory would put the teams in a tie for first.

Reagan (14-1-1, 9-1) beat Davie County, 6-3, to win the Central Piedmont Conference title.
Davie (11-2, 7-2) got wins from Laura Becker and Amanda Ngo in singles and Becker/Emery Rosenbaum in doubles.

Concord (13-3, 9-1) swept A.L. Brown to clinch a tie for the South Piedmont Conference championship.
Cox Mill was 8-1 in the SPC entering Wednesday’s match with Northwest Cabarrus.
High school soccer
First-place Salisbury (13-2-1, 9-1-1) defeated Lexington, 2-1, in another tough Central Carolina match on Wednesday.
Tony Figueroa netted both Hornets goals in the first 20 minutes and the Salisbury defense made it stand up.
Assists were registered by Eriq Argrett and Jack Fisher. Josh Faulkner recorded nine saves in goal, including stuffing a point-blank breakaway in the waning moments to preserve the victory.
Salisbury got excellent play from Brody Dillon, Angel Quintero, Hugo Trujillo, Brayan Aviles and Bryan Garcia Cortez.
Salisbury takes on Thomasville tonight at Ludwig Stadium, with games at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m.

Carson won on PKs vs. West Rowan after Wednedsay’s North Piedmont Conference match was 2-all after regulation and the overtime periods.
Carson won, 4-3, on the sixth round of PKs.
Sebastian Trujillo scored unassisted for West. Stevenson Lopez scored with Kenneth Ortiz assisting. Diego Menendez made four saves.
The Carson scoring was not available.
• West won the jayvee match, with Salvador Bautista getting two goals and Joseph Turcios one.
Mid. school football
Knox won against China Grove, 46-6.
James Francis III had a fumble recovery for a touchdown.
JyMikaah Wells had a 55-yard punt return and had rushing touchdowns of 40 and 25 yards.
Nasir Lowe had a 50-yard kickoff return. Tyreze Miller had a 35-yard TD.
Amari Johnson carried five times for 40 yards.
Jerome Blakeney III, Jalen Chunn and Wells scored PATs.

Erwin’s seventh and eighth grade teams won against China Grove on Wednesday. Scoring for the seventh-graders in a 30-14 win were Tijohn Everhart, Jacques Jones and Anthony Jones.
Erwin’s eighth-graders won, 22-6. Scoring for the Eagles were Christian Chalk and Gavin Trexler, with Cole Eagle adding the extra points.
Local golf
Sacred Heart Catholic School will host its 18th annual golf tournament on Friday at the The Revival at the Crescent in Salisbury.
Cost for the event is $90/individual (4-person team) and includes green, cart and range ball fees; lunch, snacks and beverages and post tourney awards ceremony. Lunch will be served at 12:30 followed by a 1:30 shotgun start. Entry deadline is Wednesday, Oct 10.
