The Rowan County Board of Commissioners decided Tuesday to waive solid waste fees during a weekend cleanup at High Rock Lake.

High Rock Lake Clean Sweep is a community volunteer effort scheduled from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

The Davidson County commissioners previsously approved a similar provision.

Hundreds of volunteers are expected and will be assigned to individual coves to clear trash from parts of the lake’s 300 miles of shoreline.

Volunteers can sign up from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Southmont access point on the lake, located off Wildlife Recreation Area Access Road in Lexington. Planners are seeking both individual volunteers and those with pontoon boats to assist in the effort.

Gloves, trash bags, plastic boat deck coverings, and cove assignments will be distributed during registration.

Saturday’s cleanup will begin at the same access point, with staff from the Wildlife Resources Commission on site to conduct prelaunch boat safety checks. Volunteers without boats will be shuttled to targeted coves for trash pickup on pontoon boats.

Domino’s and Lexington BBQ will provide free lunch to volunteers.
