SALISBURY — On Thursday, Oct. 4, Livingstone College celebrated Bring Your Bible to School Day with a Bible read-in at the Andrew Carnegie Library. Led by the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church Student Council of Livingstone College, over 300 students gathered to read and listen to scripture read by their peers and various participants.

Senior student-athlete, Keshawn Ward who one day aspires to become a professional athlete remembered NFL Hall of Famer Tony Dungy’s acceptance speech.

“I remember Coach Dungy read from a scripture his mom taught him so I looked it up as I prepared for the read-in,” Keshawn said. “Sure, this was a class effort, but I wanted to make it a little personal. I think Coach Dungy is an excellent role model and wanted to include the scripture he highlighted in my presentation.”

Sophomore Social Work major Tiara Heard read from Matthew 6:1-4. When asked why she chose this selection she said:

“I am a Social Work major and plan to help others one day. It was important to me to find a scripture that will help me in my journey to becoming a better person as I know that will naturally enhance me, and therefore my career and of course, the profession.”

A favorite of many students was any selection from the book of Psalms, and a very popular choice was Psalm 23.

At the read-in and throughout the campus, New Testament Bibles were distributed by volunteers of the local chapter Gideons International.

“It is a great feeling to know Livingstone College still strives to instill a spiritual foundation in its students. I am happy I was able to share in this event with the current students during my homecoming experience,” Alumna Ronneshia Carter said.
