In the United Way  cross country meet held at Newton’s Southside Park on Wednesday, South Rowan won the invitational race in a 12-team field.

South sophomore Noah Julian was the individual champion in 16:50.87 in adverse weather conditions.

Ari Moya (8th, 17:38), Ian Waugh (14th, 17:55), Nolan Miller (22nd, 18:43) and  Landon Cromer (33rd, 19:04) were the others scorers for the Raiders.

West Rowan took third place in the eight-team championship race.

Thomas Waldo was ninth in 17:03 to lead the Falcons.  Other scorers for West were Damian Ackman (19th, 18:07), Devon Pena (24th, 18:24), Matthew Ramsay (30th, 18:51) and Luke Harrison (39th, 19:35).

East Rowan was fifth in the championship race.

Jake Earnhardt (29th, 18:49) led the Mustangs.

Other scorers for East were Preston Whicker  (35th, 19:16),  Adam Whitley (36th, 19:21), Thomas Ferguson (37th, 19:23) and Matthew Burroughs (41st, 19:44).

South Rowan’s girls were fourth in the 12-team invitational race.

South’s Bethany Rymer was third in 20:02.

Madison McGuire (12th, 22:31), Anahi Reta (16th, 22:50) and Zoey Nichols (21st, 23:26) and Jessica Winkler were other scorers for the Raiders.

In the girls championship race, West Rowan was seventh and East Rowan was eighth in a nine-team field.

Megyn Spicer led the Falcons. She was 19th in 22:06. The second runner for West was Brenda Mancia (35th, 23:54).

Adalie Harrison  (22nd, 22:15) led the Mustangs. Grace Faller (34th, 23:45) was the second runner for East.

College soccer

Amanda Hand’s goal in overtime secured Catawba’s 1-0 victory against Mars Hill Wednesday at Meares Stadium.

The Kernersville native netted her second goal of the season for the Indians (9-2, 4-2 SAC)  with 50 seconds remaining in the first 10-minute extra period.

Local golf

Sixty GARS members played at Rolling Hills.

Low ‘A’ Flight player was Ted Weant with a net of 63.89.  Low ‘B’ Fight player was Frank Masingo with a net of 62.43.

Low ‘C’ Flight player was Carl Moore with a net of 61.77. Low ‘D’ Flight player was Ralph Brown with a net of 64.62.

Donald Martin, 75, shot, a 75.  Ben Moore, 81, shot an 81. Frank Masingo. 83, shot a 77. Clive Mahaffey, 83, shot an 81. Buddy Barger, 84, shot an 81. Ralph Brown. 87, shot an 87.   JC Ritchie, 93, shot an 85.

Larry Petrea had low gross score with a 70, and Carl Moore shot low net score.

On a regular Tuesday play day at Corbin Hills, Susan Morris won gross and Faye Cline had second gross.

Mary Seaford had first net, and Bev Cobb was second.  Ruth Bowles had low putts.

Mid. school football

Knox won  against Southeast, 34-0.

JyMikaah Wells had touchdowns of 95, 85, 60 and 25 yards.

Tyreze Miller caught a 25-yard touchdown pass from QB Jerome Blakeney III.

Johnai Rippy and Amari Johnson scored 2-point conversions.

Anthony Dodd led the shutout by the Knox defense with sacks and big tackles.  Wells and  Johnson had strong defensive games.

The offensive line did a great job of protecting the QB and creating opportunities for touchdowns.

Next week is “Spirit Week” for Knox. The Trojans play North Rowan on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

Hand found the back of the Lions (2-9-0, 1-5 SAC) net unassisted, from just inside the box on the far post.

With the victory, the Indians improved to 9-2-0 overall and 4-2-0 in league play, matching their win total from last season’s South Atlantic Conference action, with four conference matches remaining. They vaulted up the league table into fourth place, three points behind Carson-Newman, Anderson and Lenoir-Rhyne, which are tied at the top with 15 points each.

Catawba entered the contest ranked eighth in this week’s United Soccer Coaches NCAA DII Women’s Southeast Region Poll. The Indians were unable to capitalize on playing with a player advantage from the 38th minute of regulation, until Hand struck at 99:10.

The Indians’ defense kept Mars Hill’s offense in check, allowing just two of the Lions’ 11 shots to make it on net, where keeper Shelby Thompson saved both.
