High school cross country: South girls win CCC; boys third

SALISBURY — Led by freshman Bethany Rymer, South Rowan took first place in the the Central Carolina Conference Cross Country Championships held on Tuesday at Salisbury Community Park.
Rymer finished second in 20:52 behind individual champ Sheccid Ontiveros of Ledford, who ran 19:51.
South’s score was 60. Other team scores were East Davidson (71), Ledford (79), Central Davidson (91), Oak Grove (130), North Davidson (146), West Davidson (150) and Salisbury (150).
The top five runners count toward the team score. Scorers were Madison Henry (4th, 21:36), Madison McGuire (12th, 22:48), Anahi Reta (16th, 23:10) and Zoey Nichols (26th, 24:25).
Rymer, Henry and McGuire were among the 15 players making all-conference.
Salisbury got all-conference performances from Leah Cressler (5th, 21:45) and Ellen Simons (10th, 22:38).
North Davidson won the championship last season.

South Rowan sophomore Noah Julian was the individual boys championship, running 17:20.
Julian led South to third place in the team standings.
Central Davidson (66) and Oak Grove (66) tied for first, with Central Davidson winning the sixth-runner tiebreaker.
South (68) finished ahead of Ledford (70), East Davidson (114), North Davidson (122), Salisbury (205) and West Davidson (232).
South’s Ari Moya finished seventh in 18:15 and made all-conference.
South’s other scorers were Ian Waugh (18th, 18:49), Nolan Miller (19th, 18:53) and Landon Cromer (23rd, 19:09).
Salisbury was led by Michael Lowry (22nd, 19:06).
Runner-up was North Davidson’s Cameron Mercer in 17:31.
Ledford won the championship in 2017.
Next for South Rowan and Salisbury runners will be the 2A Midwest Regional at the Ivey Redmon Sports Complex in Kernersville on Oct. 27 at 11 a.m.
