SOUTHERN PINES — The scores in the 3A golf state championships weren’t what the East Rowan Mustangs had hoped for, but it was about the journey more than the destination.

“Anytime you get to compete on the last day of a season, you’ve had a great season,” East coach Rhett Teems said.

East Rowan’s girls tied for 10th in the 3A golf state championships held at par-72 Longleaf.

As a team, East shot 295-305 — 600.

Senior Carmen Fraley led the Mustangs in her final match, shooting 91 on Tuesday to go with Monday’s 94.  Fraley shot 45 on the back nine, and then 46 on the front side. She made a birdie on the par-5 No. 16 hole on Tuesday and had three pars.

Camryn Corriher, another East senior, shot 98 on Tuesday after a 96 on Monday. Corriher birdied the par-5 No. 5 hole  Tuesday and made two pars. She made an 11 on her next-to-last hole, but came back strong to finish with a bogey.

East senior Hailey Fesperman shot 116 on Tuesday after shooting 105 on Monday.

Fraley tied for 38th. Corriher tied for 51st. Fesperman was 73rd.

“All three of those girls made All-North Piedmont Conference and Carmen was the player of the year,” Teems said. “For all our seniors, it was a great year. They’ve got a lot to be proud of and they helped the program grow.”

East also got some good performances during the season from Victoria Lewis and Megan Graham.

Carson’s Sophia Brown shot 106-113 — 219 after qualifying for the state championships as an individual. She finished 70th.

Rockingham County shot 493 to win the team championship. Northern Guilford and first-round leader Cox Mill tied for second at 506.

Asheville’s Ana Tsiros shot 70-74 — 144 to win the individual championship by four strokes.
