… Legendary coach Sam Moir dies at 94
Coach Moir left a legacy worthy of emulation. As the first African-American graduate and basketball player at Catawba College from 1965-1969, I am exhibit A of his compassion and leadership. His boldness and sincerity impacted my life beyond words. Deepest sympathy to Mike, Charles and the entire Moir family and circle of friends, especially “Team Catawba.”
— Rev. Larry S. Bolick
Coach meant so much to so many. His memory will live on forever because he was such a kind and gentle man. And what a basketball coach! Thank you for being such a willing mentor to me and countless others.
— Bob Rathbun
He was kind, honorable and cared about how others were doing. He and my mother, Dot Peacock had a mutual respect for one another while working in the Catawba Athletic Department.
He will be missed on this side of heaven.
— Lynn Spaw
The Catawba community and men’s basketball program would like to send our deepest sympathy and prayers to Sam Moir’s family/friends/former players. Coach Moir had the sharpest mind, biggest heart and competitive spirit. We are honored he called our community home for so many years.

… Board of Education to consider teacher qualifications under renewal plan
Here’s a novel idea. If you want highly qualified educators, pay for them. I don’t want to hear one snivel from the state or county when this plan backfires.
The truism goes, “you get what you pay for.” You people want Einstein teaching the children but you pay Ronald McDonald wages. #RedforEd

… Longtime Waffle House employee’s best tip: ‘Just keep smiling’
I have met some of the nicest people working in a Waffle House. The food tastes the same everywhere you go and to me it is great.
Thanks for all that you do, JoJo.

… Larry Efird: A long time ago, only yesterday
There is nothing better than shared memories and friendships enriched through time and individual life experiences, and to be able to celebrate that together.
— Dan Klippenstein
… Help Humpty Dumpty
Trump and his followers keep taking credit for how President Obama saved the economy. The country is so divided and is on the precipice of everything wrong, under Trump’s lack of leadership.
— Pat Bullard
Trump may have his problems, but he’s put America back to work, companies are moving operations back to the USA, jobs are available, our military is being strengthened again, foreign countries don’t walk all over us and many more good things are happening.
— Ron Scruggs
… Editorial: Voters ask, what district?
Legislative district boundaries have been drawn and redrawn so often that it’s easy to get confused. And that should be stopped.
The county you live and pay taxes in should be your boundries. NO slices of a heavily populated area, no partial counties. Keep it simple.
