West Rowan’s volleyball team won a tense, five-set match at home against Asheville A.C. Reynolds on Thursday in the second round of the 3A state playoffs.

West won 25-20, 20-25, 25-22, 17-25 and 15-13  over the  ninth-seeded Rockets (22-4).

West had to come back from a 12-7  deficit to take  the last set.

Tori Hester had 29 kills, 23 digs and five aces. KK Dowling had 16 kills and 19 digs.

Carly Stiller had a big night with five kills, six blocks and seven digs.

Ava Link had 13 digs and 24 assists. Allison Ennis had 10 digs and 22 assists. Hannah Pratt had 14 digs.

Megyn Anglin and Kelcie Love also made key plays for the Falcons.

Link, a senior setter, suffered a sprained ankle in the fifth game.

Eighth-seeded West (19-4) will head to top-seeded Marvin Ridge  (40-2) on Saturday.

Marvin Ridge swept South Iredell 25-17, 27-25 and 25-20 on Thursday.

Carson volleyball

Third-seeded Carson swept Southwest Guilford 25-5, 25-14 and 25-22 in China Grove on Thursday in the second round of the 3A state playoffs.

Nancy Gamewell had 10 kills with zero hitting errors for the Cougars (25-3).

Grace Thomas had three aces and 20 assists. Mallory Weast  had 14 digs and 12 kills. Katie Blackwell served aces. Kary Hales had 16 error-free serve-receives and 16 digs. Jaden Vaughn had 11 digs and seven kills. Hannah Saine had two kills.

Carson will host Hickory (22-3) on Saturday.

Hickory, seeded 11th,  knocked out Cox Mill with a 3-1 victory on Thursday.

South volleyball

South Rowan’s season ended with a 25-11, 25-20 and 25-19 loss at Forbush on Thursday in the 2A state playoffs.

Janiya Downs had 10 digs and 18 kills for the Raiders (22-6). Kira Rymer had 13 assists, 10 kills and seven digs. Anna Rymer ha 13 assists. Makenzie McGuire had eight digs.

“We finished our season with heart,” South coach Jenna Horne said.

 

Davie volleyball

Davie County (22-2) won against Greensboro Grimsley 25-16, 25-14 and 25-17 on Thursday and will play at home on Saturday in a third-round matchup with Central Piedmont Conference rival Reagan.

High school soccer

Goals by Salvador Bautista and Stevenson Lopez led West Rowan to a 2-0 win against East Rowan on Thursday in North Piedmont Conference action.

Assists were by Aleksis Suarez and Esteban Trujillo.

Jacob Joseph and Jose Elizalde combined for the shutout in goal.

High school football

A.L. Brown stopped a three-game losing streak with a 28-17 South Piedmont Conference road win at Robinson on Thursday.

Jaron Cooper had two rushing TDs for the Wonders (5-5, 1-3). Jordan Medley threw a pair of TD passes.

Cooper’s 12-yard scoring run gave the Wonders a 7-0 lead, but Robinson controlled most of the first half and went to the break with a 14-7 lead.

Down 17-7 in the third quarter, A.L. Brown’s comeback started with another scoring run by Cooper, who powered through defenders for  a 7-yard TD.

Medley’s 18-yard touchdown pass to Jose Vargas put the Wonders ahead 21-17 early in the fourth quarter.

Medley’s 30-yard connection with Steven Robinson pushed the lead to 28-17 with 2:38 remaining.

Antonio Knight made an interception to stop Robinson’s  last threat.

The Wonders take some momentum into next week’s Bell Game with Concord. The Spiders put up a fight before losing to unbeaten Northwest Cabarrus, 24-14, on Thursday.

Individual state singles and doubles championships will be decided this weekend.
