Bristol’s Daniel Wagner (South Rowan) went 2-for-3 in a 7-4 victory against Kingsport on Monday.
Wagner is batting .308. He’s tied for eighth in the Appalachian League with 16 RBIs and tied for seventh with six stolen bases.
* Ogden’s Jerry Sands (Catawba) rapped two doubles and a single to push his batting average back to .410 on Monday.
* Savannah’s Tim Smith (Catawba) pitched a scoreless ninth inning against the Kannapolis Intimidators on Monday in Savannah.
– Wood bat leagues
Forest City’s Wade Moore (West Rowan, Catawba) had two hits and two RBIs in a 9-4 win against Gastonia on Monday. Forest City is 34-5 in the Coastal Plain League.
– Pro football
Mahoning Valley Thunder quarterback Brad Roach (Catawba) was knocked out of Saturday’s af2 game against the Peoria Pirates by an injury.
Roach was 4-for-7 with two picks when he left the game. Mahoning Valley lost 76-34.
* The Rowan Rampage opens the regular season at Knox on Saturday, July 25, against the Triangle Rattlers.
– Local golf
Eric Edwards shot 37-35 ó 72 at Asheboro Golf Club and finished tied for fourth in Monday’s stroke-play qualifying for the 13-under N.C. Junior Championships. Edwards will compete against Winston-Salem’s Andrew Kennedy today in match play.
– Rose to Mars Hill
Zac Rose, a 6-foot-7 player who began at Salisbury High before transferring to Cannon School in Concord, will continue his basketball career and education at Mars Hill.
Rose averaged 2.7 points as a varsity freshman and 4.1 points as a sophomore at SHS. He scored 186 points as a Hornet.
– East triathlon camp
The East Rowan YMCA is holding a triathlon training camp July 20-24 for grades 3-8. Camp runs from 9 until noon daily.
Youngsters will receive individual instruction in swimming, running, and biking.
The camp will close with a triathlon competition on Friday, July 24. Registration costs are $60 for YMCA members and $90 for non-members and include a dri-fit shirt and speed laces.

– Prep football
Northwest Cabarrus is at West Rowan the second week of the 2009 football season (Aug. 28) in a matchup that’s already getting attention.
Returning to action for the Trojans will be Jeremy Cannon, the standout quarterback who missed his junior season with a torn ACL suffered in a preseason scrimmage.
In the final game of his sophomore season against South Point, Cannon passed for 487 yards in a 70-31 loss in the third round of the 3A playoffs. Cannon, 6-foot-2, 192 pounds, is being recruited by a number of schools.
– Knox workouts
Football workouts for grades 7-8 at Knox begin today from 5:30-7:30 p.m.

– Youth football
The Rowan County Youth Football League (Y.F.L.) recently held its monthly meeting. Playing and registration sites are being set.
Registration for the upcoming season will be Aug. 29-Sept. 5, with sites to be announced.
R.C.Y.F.L. a non-profit league, serves Rowan County football players and cheerleaders in grades 3-6.
Teams are formed by school attendance. Registration will remain $80 for the third straight year.
The league is asking for volunteer football and cheerleading coaches from all corners of the county. Criminal background checks are required of all volunteers.
North Rowan and West Rowan High are again locked in as game sites. Sponsors are needed for several teams.
