With seven RBIs on Saturday, Trey Holmes set Rowan’s single-game record under the current format of the state tournament, which became a double-elimination, single-site event in 2000.
Brian Hatley (vs. Kannapolis in 2000) and Noah Holmes (vs. Wayne in 2008) had four RBIs in one game.

WINNING MATTERS: Rowan starter Corbin Shive pitched 42/3 innings before giving way to Parker Gobbel, who got the final out of the fifth to maintain a 5-4 lead and walked both batters he faced in the sixth. Cody Laws tossed two scoreless frames.Gobbel (3-0) was officially credited with the win.
When the game was shortened to seven innings by the 10-run rule, there was outside debate over whether or not Shive could qualify for the victory.
Members of ECU’s sports information staff, who are helping out by acting as the official scorers, cited rule 10.17, subsection B, subset 1, of the MLB rulebook. It states that if a starting pitcher has not completed five innings of a game that lasts six or more innings on defense “then the official scorer shall credit as the winning pitcher the relief pitcher, if there is only one relief pitcher, or the relief pitcher who, in the official scorer’s judgment was the most effective, if there is more than one relief pitcher.”
