Tournament roundup …
Nick Lomascolo struck out 14 batters and pitched 82/3 innings to lead Mooresville to a 5-4 victory against Rocky Mount on Saturday night.
Lomascolo, a Catawba-bound left-hander, threw 145 pitches, 94 for strikes.
Aaron Meadows’ RBI single in the first inning got the Moors (19-12) started. Billy Nantz scored later in the inning on a wild pitch for a 2-0 lead.
With the game deadlocked 2-2 in the eighth, Dylan West delivered a two-run double for the Moors. West scored the Moors’ fifth run on Chase LeVan’s groundball into the hole at shortstop.
Lomascolo carried that 5-2 edge into the bottom of the ninth, but he allowed Xavier Macklin’s third hit of the game to open the inning and Ben Fish followed with a two-run homer.
Lomascolo (5-1) struck out the next two batters, but Rocky Mount put the potential tying and winning runs on base with a walk and a hit batsman. Mooresville coach Josh Graham then turned to Taylor Thurber, who nailed down the final out of the game on a strikeout.
Mooresville plays Wilmington today at 3 p.m. at ECU.
Wilmington 11, Shelby 7
Kelvin Freeman hit a grand slam during a six-run fifth to spark Wilmington (25-4) to a come-from-behind victory.
Russell McFarland hit a two-run homer and had three RBIs for Shelby.
Shelby (26-8) enjoyed a 24-game winning streak earlier this year, but it committed four errors and walked nine.
Cherryville 14, Pitt Co. 7
Cherryville, a heavy favorite, trailed 7-5 against the tournament’s host team before scoring five runs in the sixth inning.
Three more runs in the seventh gave Cherryville (28-9) a 13-7 advantage.
Shortstop Drew Reynolds went 5-for-5 to pace Cherryville’s 21-hit attack that included seven doubles. J.C. Drewery hit a home run.
Cory Parks shut down Pitt (6-12) for four innings, fanning seven and allowing Cherryville to take charge.
