The Rowan Rampage semipro football team plays at home today at 4 p.m. at Knox Middle School against the Monroe Mustangs.
The Rampage won the Central Carolina Football League championship last season and has won six straight games over two seasons and 14 of its last 16.
The Rampage is 1-0 this season. This will be the opener for the second-year Mustangs.
Admission is $6 for adults. Admission is $3 for ages 12-under. Admission is free for 6-under.
Anyone bringing a case of bottled water will be admitted free.
n Intimidators win
The Kannapolis Intimidators won 5-3 at Lake County on Friday in a game played at Classic Park in Eastlake, Ohio.
Luis Sierra hit a tiebreaking RBI double in the seventh, and Dan Black added a run-scoring single.
Brandon Short had a two-run double to give Kannapolis an early advantage.
Kevin Asselin (3-3) got the win, pitching two scoreless innings out of the bullpen. Charlis Burdie and Dan Remenowsky finished things off on the hill. Remenowsky got his 17th save.
n Kannapolis starting pitcher Dexter Carter was part of Friday’s trade that brought Jake Peavy from San Diego to the Chicago White Sox. Carter was 6-2 for Kannapolis with a 3.13 ERA and a league-leading 143 strikeouts in 118 innings.
n Minor leagues
Ogden’s Jerry Sands (Catawba) was 2-for-4 in a 4-1 win against Idaho Falls on Friday and is batting .352.
n Padres prospect Chris Ahearn (Catawba) was 1-for-2 on Friday in the Arizona Rookie League.
n Clinton’s Kyle Seager (NW Cabarrus, UNC) walked twice but went 0-for-3 in a 4-3 loss to Great Lakes on Friday.
Seager is in an 0-for-8 mini-slump and is batting .341.
n Savannah’s Tim Smith (Catawba) allowed three hits and one earned run in two innings in an 11-2 loss against Bowling Green on Friday.
n Wood bat leagues
Josh Hohn (Catawba) hit his first homer of the season to account for Asheboro’s only run in a 3-1 CPL loss against Forest City on Thursday.
n CIAA football
Livingstone was ranked ninth out of 12 in a preseason poll of CIAA coaches. Fayetteville State was tabbed as the team to beat. See Scoreboard for poll results and the preseason All-CIAA team.
n Because of repairs being made at Charlotte’s Memorial Stadium, the Oct. 3 meeting between J.C. Smith and Livingstone will be played in Salisbury at Alumni Stadium.
It’s an event with lots of history attached. Livingstone and J.C. Smith played the first football between HBCU schools in Salisbury in 1892. J.C. Smith was known as Biddle then.
n Shaw announced it will play its 2009 home games at Millbrook High in Raleigh. The Bears played at Durham County Stadium the past two seasons. Shaw has reduced ticket prices from $25 to $15. A proposal was made several years ago to build a stadium to be shared by Shaw and St. Augustine’s, but financing hasn’t materialized.
n Salisbury Jamboree
The Salisbury Police Athletic League is holding a Salisbury Youth Football Jamboree on Aug. 22. All youth football teams are invited.
Police Athletic League football registration for ages 8-12 is Aug. 4, 6 and 8 at the Civic Center field near the basketball court. PAL is a traveling and competitive football team.

n Edwards update
Local golfer Eric Edwards competed in the AJGA All-Star event at Penn State this week and shot rounds of 70-75 ó 145 to finish third.
Edwards’ top-5 finish qualified him to play in the AJGA All-Star Invitational Tournament in early October.
