Local golf roundup …
Larry Morris made a rare double eagle on Monday on the No. 6 hole at Corbin Hills. Morris was one of more than 70 GARS members playing in a tournament with a Captain’s Choice format.
Odds against a golfer making a double eagle are several million to one. Morris’ two on a par 5 helped his team, which also included Bobby Bryant, Lloyd Clodfelter and Rudie Mounts, to finish third in the event at minus-11.
Buddy Barger, John Daniels, Ron Ervin, Jeff Williams and Gary Wortman shot minus-14 to win the tournament. Don Bishop, Cliff Cutrell, Carrol Downey and Don Martin shot minus-12 for second place.
Marty Walker and Frank Masingo won the closest-to-the-pin holes. Butch Grambow sank the longest putt on No. 9.
* Roy Dixon (Salisbury) shot 72-73 ó 145 and took second in the Keith Hills Junior Amateur Championship held in Buies Creek. Wilson’s Paul Howell shot 143.
* In Tuesday’s first round of the Dogwood State Junior Championship held at Cabarrus Country Club, Salisbury graduate Allison Lee shot 85 and was tied for 12th in the 16-18 girls division.
Alex Nianouris (Salisbury) shot 77 and was tied for 12th in the 14-15 boys division.
Dixon (Salisbury) shot 76 and was tied for 37th in the boys 16-18 division.
* The Corbin Hills Women’s Golf Association played a low gross, low net, low putt tournament on Tuesday. Susan Morris won low gross, with Phyllis Durland was second and Bev Cobb third.
Mary Seaford won low net, with Donna DeVlieger second and Shirley Baucom third.
Beth Calhoun and Tony Iossi paced the low putts category.
* The annual “Swing’n fore Nazareth” golf tournament is set for Monday, Aug. 31, at Lexington Golf Club. Swing Transport sponsors the Texas Scramble event that begins with lunch at noon and a shotgun start at 1 p.m.
Cost is $100 per player or $400 per team. Entry fee includes lunch, green fee, cart, refreshments and prizes. Proceeds benefit boys and girls living at Nazareth Children’s Home.
There are prizes for the top three places, closest to pin and longest drives, plus a $30,000 hole-in-one jackpot.

* The 4th Carolinas Pro-Junior Championships will be played Aug. 10 at The Club at Irish Creek.
The Carolinas Golf Association event is 18-hole stroke play competition with a Pinehurst-style Modified Alternate Shot format.
– Erwin girls hoops camp
The Erwin Lady Eagles basketball camp will be held Aug. 10-13 at the Erwin Middle School gym.

– Sacred Heart hoops
Sacred Heart’s boys basketball team was 3-0 in a round-robin tournament held in Conover.
Banks Fisher had 14 points and 16 rebounds in a 52-27 victory against Concordia Lutheran. Coleman Hayes had 10 points and 10 rebounds. Bobby Cardelle hit the boards and had six steals.
* In a 48-36 victory against Winston-Salem First Assembly, Fisher had 22 points and 18 rebounds. Yonathan Sorto had 12 rebounds. Hayes had 11 points.
The Dolphins topped Our Lady of Mercy 45-29 with Fisher scoring 15 points and grabbing 14 boards. Max Fisher had 10 points. Spencer Storey contributed five steals and was tough on the glass.
Other team members include Chili Chilton, Eric Edwards, Reilly Gokey and Christian Hester.

– Overseas basketball
Donte Minter (West Rowan, Appalachian State) has signed to play the upcoming season in Spain.
Minter, 6-foot-8, averaged 16.2 points and 7.8 rebounds in 21 games in Portugal last season.
* Bryan McCullough (North Rowan, UNC Asheville) has signed to play the upcoming season with the Paderborn Baskets in Germany. McCullough, 6-6, has played previous seasons in Germany, Romania and Hungary.
– Pro football
Ron Ellington (Catawba) made three tackles for the El Paso Generals in a 66-35 loss against the Billings Outlaws in the Intense Conference championship game in the Indoor Football League.
El Paso finished 13-3. Billings (14-2) will play host to the River City Rage in the United Bowl.
– Beckham honored
Former Kannapolis Intimidator Gordon Beckham, 22, was named American Legion Rookie of the Month for July. Beckham batted .330 with 10 doubles and 18 RBIs.
– Minor leagues
New Britain lefty Spencer Steedley (East Rowan) struck out three while pitching the sixth and seventh innings in a 7-2 loss against Erie on Tuesday. Steedley allowed a solo homer to Tigers prospect Cale Iorg.
– Intimidators win
Luis Sierra cracked a game-winning homer for the Kannapolis Intimidators in a 7-5 victory at West Virginia on Tuesday.
Kannapolis blew a five-run lead before Sierra hit a two-run, tiebreaking homer in the seventh.
– International baseball
Jeremy Johnson (Mooresville) made his debut recently for the LG Twins in the Korean Baseball Organization and pitched 61/3 innings against the Seoul Heroes. He struck out six and allowed three runs. Johnson got a no-decision.
– China Grove baseball
China Grove youth baseball and softball leagues will hold registration for the fall season through Aug. 14 at Dale’s Sporting Goods.
There are Coach Pitch, Junior and Senior levels for baseball. Softball includes leagues for ages 6-13.

Catawba’s men’s soccer team was picked to finish eighth out of nine teams in preseason voting by SAC coaches.
Tusculum received six first-place votes and was picked to win the league. Carson-Newman, Lincoln Memorial and Wingate followed the Pioneers in the poll and received one first-place vote each.
– South Raider Day
South Rowan High School Raider Day is Saturday, Aug. 8, and includes a car wash, yard sale and hamburger/hot dog sale.
