Area Sports Briefs: Intimidators win again

The Kannapolis Intimidators accepted nine walks and rolled over Greensboro 7-1 at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium on Monday night.
James Albury (2-0) pitched six innings for the win. Kyle Shelton had a two-run double for the division-leading Intimidators.
n Minor leagues
Jerry Sands (Catawba) hit a triple for the Great Lakes Loons on Sunday and was 2-for-4 with a double on Monday.
n Kane County’s David Thomas (Catawba) may miss the rest of the season with a broken finger incurred on a head-first slide.
n Former Cy Young winner Jake Peavy is scheduled to start for the Charlotte Knights in a rehab assignment on Thursday.
n Local golf
Fifty-eight GARS members played at Crescent Golf Club on Monday.
Low ‘A’ Flight player was Butch Adams with a net of 67.04. Low ‘B” Flight player was Jeff Williams with a net of 66.83. Low ‘C’ Flight player was Don Martin with a net of 66.14. Low ‘D’ player with a net of 69.16 was Paul Dombrowski.
n Locals participated in the 4th Carolinas Pro-Am at Club at Irish Creek. Audrey Morgan and Davis Richards shot 37-35 ó 72 and tied for 14th. Jeff Austin and Alex Austin shot 38-37 ó 75 and tied for 23rd. Ellerbe Cox and Chad Blakenbeker tied for 33rd at 41-39 ó 80.
n The McCanless Couples played nine holes on Sunday with 18 golfers participating in a Captain’s Choice format.
Matt and Liz Murphy shot 32 for top honors. Mark and Samantha Haviland shot 33 for second place. John Rowland and Monica Green shot 35 and took third in a scorecard playoff.
Matt Murphy won closest to the pin on No. 3. Devin Smith made the longest putt on No. 5.
n South golf tourney
The South Rowan Alumni Association Golf tournament has openings for a tournament to be played Saturday, Aug. 15, at Warrior.
The format is Captain’s Choice.
The cost is $240 per team. Teams may register by calling the Warrior at 704-856-0871 or contacting Steve Beaver at 704- 857-8412.
n South reserve seats
South Rowan now is selling season tickets to the general public for the upcoming football season. They can be purchased at the school office from 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m.
The seats will get you into South’s scrimmage Friday night against Lake Norman and Cuthbertson, a new school in western Union County.
The scrimmage begins at 6 p.m.n Carson reserve seats
Carson will be selling reserved football seats on Tuesday from 5-7 p.m. in front of the school.

Terris Sifford (West Rowan) is returning to Italy to play his fall. He’ll be with a new club ó Pol.5 Fonti Amandola.
n Local tennis
Salisbury’s Michael Childress, 9, won the Charlotte Racquet Club junior tennis tournament in the 10-under division.
Childress lost only one game in each of the first two rounds and won the championship match against the 22nd-ranked player in the division by 7-5, 6-1.
n NCHSAA awards
East Rowan posted the highest GPA among all the boys track teams in the state with a 3.42 mark.
n Knox athletics
Knox seventh-grade football players may pick up equipment on Wednesday, while eighth-graders can pick up equipment on Thursday. Pickup is from 5:30-7 p.m. The first practice is Monday at 4:15 p.m.
