AL baseball: Cano’s walk-off hit lifts Yankees in 11th

Associated PressNEW YORK ó Robinson Cano homered and hit a game-ending RBI single in the 11th inning, helping the New York Yankees finish off a successful homestand with a 4-3 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays.
Alex Rodriguez got the winning rally started when he was hit by a pitch from Shawn Camp (1-6) with one out. Rodriguez was checked on by manager Joe Girardi and a trainer but stayed in the game, eventually moving up on Jorge Posada’s single and scoring when Cano lined Camp’s first pitch into the gap in right-center.
The Yankees (71-43) have won nine of 10 to move a season-best 28 games over .500.
Athletics 6, Orioles 3
BALTIMORE ó Landon Powell (Apex) homered in Oakland’s four-run fourth inning, and the Athletics won their third straight series for the first time since April 2008.
The Athletics have survived a franchise-record run of 28 games in 28 days
Angels 10, Rays 5
ANAHEIM, Calif. ó Gary Matthews Jr. put the Angels ahead with a three-run homer in the sixth, Howie Kendrick added another three-run shot in the seventh, and Los Angeles finished a three-game sweep of the Rays to move a season-best 24 games over .500.
Grant Balfour (4-2) allowed Matthews’ homer, which sent Tampa Bay to its 34th loss in 40 games at Angel Stadium.Rangers 5, Indians 0
CLEVELAND ó Rookie Tommy Hunter turned the shutout tables on the Indians, pitching into the eighth inning.
The Rangers bounced back from a 5-0 loss with their league-leading eighth shutout.
Josh Hamilton had three hits and drove in two runs for Texas.
Red Sox 8, Tigers 2
BOSTON ó Josh Beckett pitched seven strong innings for his major league-high 14th win, and Mike Lowell and Jason Bay homered. The Red Sox won their third straight and sent AL Central-leading Detroit to its fourth loss in five games.
Twins 7, Royals 1
MINNEAPOLIS ó Joe Crede hit a three-run homer in his return to the lineup, and Francisco Liriano had his best start in two months for Minnesota.
Crede, who had not played since Aug. 6 due to a sore right shoulder, needed two cortisone shots in the joint before returning. He showed no ill effects, hitting his 15th home run in the first inning and finishing with his first three-hit game of the season and the three RBIs.
Liriano (5-11), who last won on June 28 at St. Louis, allowed one run and three hits ó both tying season lows. He struck out eight. Brian Bannister (7-9) was roughed up for a second consecutive start.
