Staff report
Rowan County’s Trey Holmes has set a program record for hits in a season with 90.
Holmes broke the mark of 87 originally set by Nick Heard in 1998 and matched by Cal Hayes Jr. in 2001.
Holmes amassed 11 hits in the recent Southeast Regional, including his 15th and 16th homers of the season.
Holmes also rapped five doubles in the regional to tie the season mark of 26 set by Tim Still in 1993.
Holmes’ current batting average of .466 is tied for third-highest all-time for a Rowan player with Jerry Hillard (1955). Craig Powers hit .475 in 1997, while Hayes batted .470 in 2001.
Holmes is tied for the third-highest RBI total in Rowan history with 69, a remarkable feat in that he’s usually batted leadoff. Coe Brier drove in 81 runs in 1980, Michael Lowman had 70 in 1998, and Brier produced 69 in 1979.
Holmes has scored 82 runs, third-best total in history. Hayes scored 83 in 2001. Kirk Huffman set the record when he crossed the plate 88 times for the 1993 state champs.
Holmes’ 16 homers are the most ever hit by a Rowan player except for Brier’s seasons of 22 and 17.
Zach Smith, Russell Michalec, Billy Veal, Corbin Shive and Noah Holmes also are impacting the single-season leaderboard in a number of offensive categories.
Forrest Buchanan is 9-0 on the mound. Shive is 8-0.
Tim Kirk (10-0, 1982) and Dickie Myers (10-0, 1971) are the only Rowan pitchers who have won as many as 10 games and ended the season with a perfect record.
*
As far as career records, Holmes needs one more double to become Rowan’s all-time leader in two-baggers.
He has 54, matching the mark set by Justin Roland, a member of the 2008 team.
Holmes has 25 career homers for third place all-time. David Trexler, whose clutch hit sent Rowan to the World Series in Oregon in 1996, pounded 26. Brier, the Babe Ruth of Rowan Legion ball, powered 43.
Holmes won’t challenge Brier’s homer record, but he has at least a chance to break Brier’s long-standing record for RBIs. Brier had 172. Holmes ranks second all-time with 164.
