Area sports briefs: Dorty shines in scrimmage

Sophomore defensive end Tristan Dorty (West Rowan) had two tackles for loss, including a sack, in Wake Forest’s scrimmage on Saturday.
An All-State and Shrine Bowl pick, Dorty is expected to start this season. He made five tackles as a redshirt freshman.
n Intimidators win
The Kannapolis Intimidators snapped a three-game losing streak and stayed in first place with an 8-1 victory at Asheville on Saturday.
Charlie Leesman (12-4) pitched seven strong innings and allowed one run. He leads the SAL in victories and has won eight in a row.
Josh Phegley and Brandon Short hit homers.
n Minor leagues
Daniel Wagner (South Rowan) had a two-run double to help Bristol beat Elizabethton 5-4 on Saturday.
n Jerry Sands had a run-scoring single for Great Lakes in a 7-5 win against Lansing on Saturday.
n Owls win title
The Forest City Owls swept the Peninsula Pilots 5-1, 5-1, made an undefeated run through the postseason and won the Petitt Cup as Coastal Plain League champions.
Forest City (51-9) got a big boost from Wade Moore (West Rowan, Catawba) in the championship games.
Moore hit a homer in the first game, a solo blast on the first pitch leading off the fifth inning. He was 2-for-4 in the nightcap.
Moore squeezed a flyball for the last out of the season.
His next baseball action will be with Catawba this fall.
n Local golf
Will Collins (Salisbury, Virginia) is tied for 29th in the Cardinal Golf Tournament in Greensboro.
Collins has shot 74-73ó 147.
n Knox athletics
Knox football practice begins Monday at 4:15 p.m.
n There will be an interest meeting for girls who want to play tennis or softball on Wednesday at 3:45 p.m. in the gym.

n South reserve seats
South Rowan now is selling season tickets to the general public for the upcoming football season. They can be purchased at the school office from 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m.
n Hurley Y programs
Register for a fall coed soccer program through Aug. 31. Leagues for ages 3-14. There’s a new division for ages 3-4.
