Area Sports Briefs: Catawba loses 2 at Wingate

WINGATE — Catawba’s women’s basketball team ran into a career day by Wingate’s Courtney Robinson and lost 83-63 in South Atlantic Conference action on Wednesday afternoon.

Robinson scored 24 for the Bulldogs (7-3, 3-1) at Cuddy Arena.

Catawba (5-4, 2-2) was tied early at 8-all, but Wingate enjoyed a 9-1 run and never looked back.

Catawba got within seven early in the third quarter on 3-pointers by Mercedes  Wampler and Anna Gardner, but the Bulldogs stretched it out again.

Wingate shot a sizzling 52.6 percent, while holding Catawba to 35.3-percent shooting. Catawba was out-rebounded 45-24 and outscored in the paint 42-20.

Talia Barnes scored 15 for Catawba, including nine free throws. Wampler and Taisha DeShazo scored 12 each. DeShazo had 11 rebounds.

Caroline Averette scored 21 points for Wingate. Wingate shot 21-for-24 from the foul line.

Catawba men

WINGATE — Catawba has been one of the most accurate shooting teams in Division II all season, but that wasn’t the case on Wednesday.

Wingate held the Indians to a season-low 37 percent from the field and 30 percent on 3-pointers and pounded  the Indians at Cuddy Arena, 88-74.

Compounding Catawba’s problems was a season-high 16 turnovers. Wingate also rejected 13 shots.

The Bulldogs (5-5, 3-1) led by as many as 24 points.

Catawba (8-2, 3-1) had a seven-game winning streak stopped.

Frankie Johnson and Jarren Cottingham scored 19 each to lead the Bulldogs.

Jameel Taylor scored 16 to lead Catawba. DJ Johnson had eight points and seven boards.

Wingate finished the first half strong for a 33-28 lead.

College wrestling

  Brandon Sloop (Carson) won a major decision to help UNC Pembroke beat Belmont Abbey on Wednesday.

Mid. school girls

Erwin’s girls won against Southeast, 37-23.

Haley Dalton scored 10 for the Eagles. Icesis Nwafor had nine, while Peyton Whicker and Leah Hinceman scored seven each.

Knox’s girls won against Mooresville, 30-22.

Kyla Bryant was the leading scorer for Knox with 14 points.  Jamecia Huntley scored 12.

Mid. school boys

Knox’s boys lost to Mooresville, 34-31.

Jayden  “Juke” Harris led the Trojans in scoring with 12 points.

CJ Toomer and Tyreze Miller had 7 each. Jalen Chunn scored  five.
