Keep pedalingThe Bike Plan pedaling its way through Salisbury city government could benefit city residents in several ways, if the city can ever afford to implement its recommendations.
Biking is a good form of physical exercise. It’s certainly cheaper and cleaner for the environment than driving a car or truck. And having clearly marked biking loops around town, as recommended by the plan under consideration, could attract bike-loving tourists and impress visitors ó an economic plus-plus.
Ideally, a bike program would make city streets safer for everyone by giving cyclists their own space in bike lanes. If there’s a way to retrofit this old city to today’s biking standards ó including bridges, railroad crossings and storm drain grates ó even folks who put away their old Schwinns decades ago will have a reason to appreciate bicycles. And maybe buy a new one.
