Transit service
a great experience
I have been living in Salisbury now for about two years and have watched the county transit system grow. Not only does it have the RITA service but also Rowan Express, which connects Salisbury with Kannapolis, with stops in China Grove and Landis and transfers to downtown Concord and even Concord Mall.
Coming from Oregon, which has some of the country’s best rail and bus service, I was impressed with how Rowan County has put together such a great transit system.
What a wonderful experience I had riding to Kannapolis the other day. The cost was only $1. That’s right ó $1 in each direction. The van leaves the city transit mall near the train station five days a week.
The drivers, Ernie and John, were courtious, friendly and very helpful, explaining every stop and making sure the passengers got their transfers to the proper bus.
So call 704-216-8888 for information about Rowan Express and experience a wonderful day for yourself.

Bad for business
Businesses recently received a letter from the N.C. sales tax office informing them that as of Sept. 1, sales taxes on all retail sales within their business would increase by 1 percent.
My question to your readers is very simple, and we truly do want to hear people’s thought on this issue: How does the increase of sales taxes encourage more spending by consumers in such a downward-turning economy? Does not this take 1 percent from the consumer? It seems to me that this is a slap in the face for the taxpayers so government can continue offering state employees all the benefits they have been so generously given with taxpayers’ monies.
Seems to me if they were concerned about the people, sales taxes would have gone done so the consumer would have a little more money to support local merchants.
Wonder how much it would have gone up if the education lottery were not in place.

A wonderful friend
This is a tribute to “one-woman wonder” Christine Whitton. What do you say about a wonderful person whose involvement was so profound that it has left a mark on our city and a mark on our hearts?
She was my friend. When Chris liked you and believed in your cause, she was in for the long ride.
I loved her as a lady and respected her as a businesswoman and a leader.
I have been going to Chris and Jim Whitton’s house every week for 23 years. She will greatly be missed, as a great and wonderful friend.
