Area sports briefs: Salisbury, Wonders win jayvee games

Salisbury’s jayvee football team beat East Rowan 7-0 with a special-teams touchdown on Thursday.
Elijah Wright scooped the ball on a mishandled punt and returned it 25 yards to score. Phillip Kennedy kicked the PAT. B.J. Woods, Kiero Cuthbertson and William Brown sparked Salisbury’s defense.
Hanson Saryee and Nolan Meyerhoeffer led Salisbury’s offense.
* Damien Washington had scoring bursts of 63, 28 and 17 yards to lead A.L. Brown to a 27-6 victory against South Rowan.
Demetrius Jackson broke a run of 85 yards to score, and J.P. Lott added a two-point conversion run. Brown had 346 yards of offense.
* West Rowan defeated Northwest Cabarrus 20-14.
– Prep soccer
Jeremy Dawson scored three goals as North Rowan beat South Davidson 5-0 in YVC action on Thursday.
Victor Berrios scored two goals for the Cavaliers.
Keeper Thomas Baker (seven saves) and Andy Hallett were defensive standouts for North (1-2, 1-0).
– Prep cross country
Gray Stone runners swept the YVC pre-season meet held at Albemarle’s Morehead Park.
The Gray Stone boys won with a score of 32. South Stanly (60) was second. North Rowan was eighth (206).
The Gray Stone girls won with a score of 25. Chatham Central (60) was second.
Gray Stone’s Dalton Wally held off South Stanly’s Sean Kluttz and Alex Thompson to win the boys race.
On the girls side, Gray Stone’s Hunter Latimer cruised to victory with teammates Amber Watkins and Janna Feathersone taking second and third.
– Prep tennis
North Rowan defeated South Stanly 9-0 for a YVC win Thursday.
Corbin Bennett, Diamond Jackson, Kelli Berry, Kayla Morgan, Haley Ridenhour and Caitlin Crawford registered singles wins for the Cavaliers (2-1 YVC). Bennett overcame a shaky second set to win a third-set tiebreaker.
Bennett-Jackson, Morgan-Ridenhour and Berry-Crawford were winning combinations in doubles.
North takes on YVC foe East Montgomery on Monday.
– College football
Carson-Newman lost 17-12 at Winona State (Minn.) to open the season on Thursday.
The Eagles were shut out until the fourth quarter and managed just 108 rushing yards.
“Our offense is so used to having good things happen and everything else goes on from that,” said head coach Ken Sparks, who is in his 30th season at the helm. “We couldn’t establish our offense like we like to. We just couldn’t run the football.”
Senior receiver Reggie Hubbard was the standout for Carson-Newman. He had seven catches for 171 yards and scored both TDs.
Carson-Newman plays at Northern Alabama next weekend.
– College basketball
Pfeiffer’s men will face the Duke Blue Devils in an exhibition contest on Oct. 24 at Cameron Indoor Stadium. Game time at Duke will be announced at a later date.
Pfeiffer will travel to Durham to play in one of the most difficult environments in the nation. The Falcons will also be going up against one of the most storied programs in college basketball history.
Tickets will be very limited with more information being released at a later date.
– College soccer
Kash Knight scored twice to lead Pfeiffer’s men’s team to a 4-0 win against Catawba at Frock Field on Thursday. It was the season opener for both teams.
Alex Moreno had the shutout in goal for Pfeiffer. He turned away the lone Indian shot.
Tyler Held recorded three saves for Catawba.
– McCanless aces
Zack Kesler made a recent hole-in-one at McCanless. He aced the No. 10 hole that measured 160 yards from the blue tees. He used an 8-iron. He was playing with Lance Irvin, Chad Weatherford and Caleb Kluttz.
* Playing from the white tees, Wayne Lipe made a hole-in-one at McCanless on the 140-yard No. 3 hole with a pitching wedge. Lipe was playing with Joe Clark and Dave Fortson.
– Rampage football
The Rowan Rampage semi-pro football team lost to the Carolina Bulldogs of Indian Land, S.C., 20-12 last Saturday to drop to 3-2 in the CCFL standings.
The Rampage, 5-2 overall, is tied for third place. The Bulldogs and the Greenville Seminoles are 5-0.
– Sacred Heart tennis
Sacred Heart’s girls tennis team defeated Forsyth Country Day 4-2 in its first match on Thursday at the refurbished Salisbury City Park courts.
Singles winners for Sacred Heart were Jordan DeJaco, Meghan Hedgepeth, Jessica Roy and Erin Ansbro.
Sacred Heart plays at Erwin on Monday.
